Son is finishing his sophomore year in mechanical engineering, with a near perfect GPA.

He is at a school that gave him a full ride, and as such, he's been trying to stick it out.

However, he is really unhappy there, and what's worse, despite his grades and ECs and research projects, he has been unable to land any internships, research positions, etc.

We would like to perhaps transfer him to another school where job prospects would be better. However, with the economy the way it's been, we have not been able to save these last two years to pay full freight for a new school.

Are there schools out there that give merit awards to transfer students?

We would likely not qualify for need based aid, and son does not have any kind of "hook" that many of the engineering scholarships require, so he would have to get something based on his merit alone.

At this point, we'd gladly take on some loans, as son has abandoned the idea of grad school and just wants to graduate and get a job. Thankfully, he's still interested in engineering, but we all feel like we're getting what we paid for at his present school.
