Merit Scholarships- No Demonstrated Financial Need

I dont qualify for any need-based financial aid, according to my ED school, so that means I can only rely on merit for scholarships. The vast majority of the scholarships are demonstrated financial need.

Which merit scholarships that have no demonstrated financial need can I apply to? Some of the deadlines I know have already passed such as Coke Cola, any others that I can apply to? Can someone create a list or recommend others?

Thanks!!

May be tough to find any merit scholarships now. See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1793418-i-won-291-500-in-outside-scholarships-ask-me-almost-anything.html

Can you afford the ED school without any financial aid? If not, you should decline the ED admission.

The best aid comes from schools themselves, but bear in mind that there are a number of schools that require applications be in by November or December to be considered for merit awards.

Also it’s important to realize that top schools offer very little merit aid, as they don’t need to pay top performers to attend. Top schools generally offer need-based aid. They may be generous with their definition of need, but still it’s frequently not enough for many families.

ok…you had a thread or two in Aug about knowing that you had no need.

You’ve been accepted ED to JHU in engineering…are you still premed?

I feel so bad and miserable right now. My parents told me today that my dream schools: JHU, Duke, and MIT will barely offer me any need-based aid. Only around 5000-10000 dollars, which is insignificant compared to the total costs of these schools. I'm applying to MIT as an athlete and they don't offer any scholarships!!!

My parents are leaning me towards the states flagships, which I don’t really want to go to. I worked so hard for my dream schools and just when I put my best application forward my parents are discouraging it. I’m so upset right now. I want to go to a good private school so bad

What are your parents saying about paying for JHU?

If your parents don’t have the money or can’t pay, they don’t have the money and can’t pay.

How can you force the issue? I’m assuming you don’t have $240K lying in an account somewhere?

As parents, we try really hard to work and save money for our children’s college expenses. Many of us are shocked at how much the costs of college have increased. You have to understand that when we went to college, your parents included, we could work part-time, and pay our tuition and fees. Everything has changed. You need to change your expectation of what you think you deserve. Go to one of your safeties, then if you want to go to your private school, go as a grad student and pay for it yourself.

Here is your older thread. Read all of,the responses again. Nothing has changed.

You say in it that your parents WILL pay for JHU…so what has changed?

Also, if you are full pay…no need…for JHU, this means your family income is likely in the $200,000 a year range.

In addition, you are an auto admit to UT, which is a fine school, at a much more modest price.

You knew you couldn’t afford it and applied ED anyway… why did you do that? Why did your parents sign off on that?

Why did you apply ED when you knew back in August that your parents wouldn’t pay?

You can only be upset at yourself because you are trying to force your parents to pay for something they don’t want to pay for nor possibly afford. You are being really deceptive and unfair to your parents.

You posted this in August:

So apparently at that point you assumed they would pay for JHU.

For the record…you can get great opportunities at UT.

What is the current situation? What are your parents saying NOW?

Didn’t you mention applying as an athlete to MIT? Did you do so to JHU as well? Did you apply ED on the urging of a coach? Did you not understand that at your family income, you would not receive need based aid?

You were deferred from MIT and got no aid from JHU? Will your parents agree to be full pay at JHU? If not, you need to decline their offer and focus on your other options. There aren’t enough outside scholarships to make a dent in a $60k/year COA, so find out how much your parents will pay and look for a school in that price range.

Dont worry, yall! I withdrew my ED acceptance from JHU. I had until Jan 15th to say yes or no to the offer, since it was special case where if you did not get biomedical engineering. I realized JHU wasnt worth it. I had to realistic in terms of financial aid and also not being allowed to major in something I wanted to do.

@nevergiveupp So where are you planning to go now?
