Merit Scholarships with 31 ACT?

DD just applied to IU. Her ACT superscore is 30.5. Will IU automatically round this score up to 31?

Her stats are:

ACT: 30.5 or 31 Superscore

GPA: 4.15 weighted

3 AP courses
2 IB courses
6 credit hours dual enrollment College Comp through community college

What level of merit scholarship is she likely to receive? Also, I just learned that a 31 ACT and 3.95 GPA automatically generates an invitation to Hutton Honors and an invitation to apply for additional merit aid? What is required for the application for merit scholarships and what level of $$ is possibly with her stats?

Thank you!

I didnt realize ACT could be in half pt. increments?! Merit Scholarships thru the University are automatic if you have the stats, an SSA ( Special Scholarship App) is automatically emailed to students that qualify. This includes an invitation to Hutton Honors and those scholarships. The deadline for Hutton IS NOT in 2015… I believe it is Dec. 1. Dont wait until the last minute, we had some transcipt issues that almost messed us up. The earlier your student applies, the earlier they will recieve these invites and emails. If your student waits until Halloween to apply to IU they will be rushed on the Hutton app. Same goes for housing. Enroll early! You will increase your chances of getting the housing you want.

ldavis, her actual ACT composite is not 30.5 – that is the average of her highest subject area scores from three different tests. My understanding is that would round up to a 31.

My daughter submitted her IU application this weekend, the school has already sent transcript and we have requested ACT scores sent. Yes, you are right about applying early and not waiting until the last minute. I did not see any automatic merit scholarship ranges on the IU website.

I believe they did stop posting “automatic” stats last year… there will be merit money tho for students in your daughters range. Just a warning, our school sent out her transcript, IU had problems receiving it. So, I believe she can set up a Onestart account? Watch that to confirm everything is in order.

ACT scores are always rounded up, so 31 is the number.

The merit scholarship for those stats will likely be between 5 and 11k based on last years incoming class. After talking to numerous parents and comparing awards, there were some odd discrepancies for kids of seemingly equal stats. The office of scholarships will absolutely not explain how your award is calculated, so don’t bother asking. I got the runaround last year when I discovered another kid from my area with identical stats got a different award.

Also know that IU unweights your HS GPA using the IU grade point system, not yours. This is important because an A- is only worth 3.7 points at IU, not 4. See here for an explanation: <a href=“Grade Value Explanation: Grade Values & Explanations: Grades & Rosters: Office of the Registrar: Indiana University”>http://registrar.indiana.edu/grades/grade-values/grade-value-explanation.shtml

The Hutton Honors deadline IS in March of 2015 for Petition admission, but that would not allow scholarship consideration. Automatic invites and scholarships happen if you’ve applied before Nov. 1 and have submitted materials by Dec… Since you have, you’re okay.

You will likely hear your child is admitted in a few weeks. IU was one of the fastest to respond to early apps last year. With good stats, it’s a no brainer for your student.

DD received admission in mid Sept 2014 and merit aid this week. Her superscore for ACT was 29; IU gave her $4000. Her brother had an ACT SS of 31 and received $9000 in 2013/14.

We are OOS but I seem to remember reading that In- State kids were most affected by IU’s recent Merit Scholarship changes?? Not sure if that’s true but I thought that was interesting and strange…

Given that IU still charges in-state rates much lower than Illinois where >11% of its students come from, it’s no surprise Indiana is hitting the locals with less scholarship dollars. They figure Indiana folks will still come to IU rather than pay OOS and they’re right.

As an OOS parent paying roughly 23k more than native Hoosiers, forgive me if I shed few tears. I know, our choice, but it still hurts that people from Indiana going to the University of Illinois only get hit for 15k more than a resident. Of course, that’s because our in-state tuition is already 50-100% higher depending on college.

Get a 31 on the ACT and you’re in the top 3% of the country. Obviously that’s worth about 20k or less at most top universities over 4 years.

We clearly need free college in this country to stay competitive with our global competitors who offer it, but that’s a topic for another forum and will likely happen one day after my kid graduates. LOL
