Do you have to apply for merit scholarships to most schools or are you in the running by virtue of your application to the school?

It varies by school, and sometimes by scholarship within the school. Check the financial aid pages of each school you’re applying to…they all have search boxes where you can type “scholarships”!

Sk8rmom has it right, it varies by school. Pay particular attention to the deadlines (some require application prior to the general app due date), and also pay attention to the requirement of supplemental information and essays. For some of the more selective and competitive (full, 1/2 Tuition) scholarships, very specific application instructions are listed, and may include the need for a support/sponsorship statement from your prinicipal. Lastly, as a general rule (from what I have read here and other research), get the application and info in early for best chance of consideration.

Our oldest has started the application process, and it helps to get a list together of the schools, deadlines, required docs, scholarships to apply for… Thank god for my wife!!

Good luck

Sk8rmom is right.

Some schools require a separate app. Sometimes the apps require essays, sometimes the apps are easy and just ask for some basic info.

Some schools don’t have a separate app. They just consider all students.

I know that my kids’ undergrad requires a simple scholarship app (no essay) even though they give assured scholarships for certain stats. The reason for the app is that they also have other scholarships for various situations…children of alumni, dependents of the armed forces, WWII descendents, certain majors, certain ethnic groups, etc…so the app clarifies some of that. Students can “check the boxes” for those other scholarships that they might qualify for.

If you want merit scholarships, look for schools that are known for awarding them AND where your stats are well-within the top 25% of the school. you’ll also need a good GPA…often a 3.5 or higher.

What are your stats? We might be able to suggest schools that will give you merit scholarships.
