Merit Scholarships

Tulane's website states that the merit scholarships that do not require a separate application range from 7500-25000. I received a 25000 scholarship and admission into the honors program (yay :)). I assumed that I had received the highest available, but after reading some of these forums I learned of the presidents scholar award. My letter says distinguished scholar award which is supposedly less than the presidents, but I got 25000. So I guess my question is what is the difference then between these two scholarships? Or is the distinguished scholar award in fact the highest that you don't have to apply separately for?

I’m not trying to sound ungrateful, I am extremely grateful and so excited to be at Tulane in the fall!! I’m just confused on the difference and trying to figure out my chances at the deans scholarship :)

It’s my understanding that the 7500-25000 range was for last year. They haven’t updated it yet, the highest is now 27,000. It is a pure merit scholarship, no separate application required.

It doesn’t really hurt your chances for Dean’s though. I know at least one winner last year only got a 22k scholarship

Ok thanks!!

Right, the 22K was the second highest scholarship available last year (of the “automatic consideration” scholarships), and that same scholarship is 25K this year. It is the only one that went up $3,000 instead of $2,000. And while most of the DHS winners are also ones that received the Presidential, it is certainly possible for a Distinguished Scholar winner to get a DHS. The stats of all these highly accomplished students are so close together, the project and other factors play a large role in who gets it in the end. That being said, just remember there are only 75 winners out of over 1,000 applications (usually), so it is obviously very very competitive.

fallenchemist, I know it is very competitive, I was just trying to decipher which bracket of students I was in, so to speak. Thank you for clearing up my confusion though!

Also, does anyone know how to sign up for honors weekend? I’m planning on attending the one in March and I can’t find where to sign up. I don’t want it to become full!

They will send you an e-mail when they are ready to start taking reservations, but if you already know which one you want you can call admissions and ask if you can sign up now. They might have a mechanism in place. It won’t get full, I don’t think, but you might as well ask now. At worst, they will just say to wait for the e-mail form.

Good luck on the DHS!!

Oh that RSVP link wasn’t there when I checked a few days ago. Thanks everyone!!
