Merit Scholarships

I'm sorry for my ignorance of PSU, as I didn't really think about applying to it until I was deferred from my top choice. I was wondering how much merit based finaid there is out there for the top students. The listings on the website were not encouraging. Have any of you recieved a full non-athletic scholarship? Is it possible?
Here are my quick stats:

SAT: 800M, 760W, 730V
ACT: 34
SATII: 800, 780, 780, 770, 760, 750, 740
GPA: 4.0UW, 5.84W, #1 in class.
Dad was alumni

It seems quite hard to achieve (a full ride from PSU w/o sports), but it can be done. There seem to be "secrets" within the various colleges/departments that provide the few full rides that PSU offers. For example, all students accepted to the Schreyer Honors College and the Eberly College of Science (not sure of its exact name) are reviewed for the Braddock Scholarship, which is a full ride. I believe there are only ~10 or fewer recepients of this scholarship, however. They really do seem difficult to find though, imo.

Anybody else? This PSU site seems pretty dead to me.

maguo1: Did you apply to Schreyers college? I am quite shocked that with your stats you did not get into your first choice. My son also applied to Cornell - which was his first choice. He applied architecture, which I believe is highly selective and did not get in. He also applied to PSU arch - first choice and engineering second choice. He got into to Engineering at PSU. Which again is very disappointing for my son.

I know you can get various scholarship through Screyers.

just a note - not all eberly college and schreyers are reviewed for the braddock scholarship, you have to complete a form to be considered for it.

i've been told that the opportunities for scholarships at PSU come more from departments once you get into a specific major, but there is limited opportunity as a freshman just entering.

maguo1: BTW For schreyers there is a separate application.

Thanks for the info all of you.
panatha: I was deferred from my top choice, which was Harvard. With Harvard admissions as crazy as it is, I was not surprised. Alot of very qualified applicants were turned away, just go on the Harvard thread.

maguo1: with your stats, you should be able to get into other ives like cornell or brown or dartmoth RD. Where else have you applied besides PSU? Which major are you pursuing?

uber cool -- thanks for catching that.

You're a SHC student, correct? If so, how do you like it so far? From what I have seen, I absolutely love the program and PSU in general. Decisions come out in mid February for the pre Nov. 30 applicants...

yea i'm SHC. i really love it and glad I chose Penn State. its just the right mix for me. lots of great academic opportunites especially in schreyers along with the crazy social atmosphere that is penn state. honors classes are tough - well, at least the ones i took (physics and calc 2) but definately worth it for the small class size and more in depth material. plus you get to know people a lot more in your honors classes than in the 300+ student classes. First semester I had really great profs, both for honors classes and regular ones. and its just overall a great time. i've met so many awesome people - and people in general are just super friendly and spirited, after all it is Happy Valley and WE ARE... PENN STATE! =)

uber: what are you majoring in? Do you mind sharing your stats that got you into shreyers?

To answer Panatha: I have also applied to Duke, Johns Hopkins, MIT, UF, Princeton, Cornell, and Wash U (st. louis). I am pursuing biochemistry at PSU.
Anybody know about that pre-med-med program? How prestigious is it? How hard is it to get in?
Also, does anybody know about the braddock scholarship? It seems pretty competitive to me.

uber cool's SAT score: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=556160&postcount=88

yea, 1540 SAT, 4.0+ GPA (not sure what it was weighted), some decent extracurriculars, varsity tennis, good recs, etc.

i'm majoring in biochemistry & molecular biology

and yea, braddock is competetive - you need really good scores/GPA and very good essays

ne1 know where we can get the form for the eberly college of science? perhaps a link or something. i was accepted to eberly and im going premed next year.. it would be a great help thanks!!
