Merit scholarships

Will Rose-Hulman be sending out any info about merit aid?

i am curious to know too about any kind of FA that Rose gives

S’s merit statement arrived in TX today. Not overwhelming, but a nice award. EFC is high, so we’ll have to see how other schools stack up.

My son got his aid package today. $15,750 worth of merit aid, plus $5500 in Fed Loans. I was expecting more, quite frankly and it’s clear that Rose apparently didn’t want him too badly. He has other options and it’s nice to finally know - it will not be Rose. Good luck, everyone!

That sounds like a decent offer, what are his stats like?

SAT Math:790
SAT Reading: 780
UW GPA: 3.879
Class Rank: 33/556
AP Scholar with Honor: AP Bio (4), AP Lang & Comp (5), APUSH (5), AP World (5)
Plus 6 AP Classes Sr Year: Stats, BC Calc, Lit & Comp, Econ, Comp Prog, Physics
ECs: Eagle Scout, NHS, State Marching Band Champs, Tri M Music Society, Pres Young Democrats. No sports! :-)

He got a better offer from Rensselaer, which really surprised me. Some of the state schools in our area came through as well, and that surprised me even more!

Sounds impressive, I am curious what type of criteria they use. Sounds like your son has some wonderful options…good luck!

He applied and got accepted very early (October 2011). It seems like we have been thinking about Rose Hulman for so long. Even though he has other options that we feel excited about (and they are closer to home), it’s a little hard to let the dream go. Very strange and a tad bittersweet.

If you look at the common data set, avg award at Rose is 10K, avg at RPI 15K. For Rose, 15K is on the high end. They simply don’t give as much aid. The fact that my S got more than the avg was gratifying to me. Would have loved 18-20K, but I suspect those are few and far between.

My son was pleasantly surprised by his offer at Rose. It is his first choice, so I am happy for him. Still trying to figure out the whole process, however. I just like to think there is a great choice out there for each and everyone of them!

One other thing. Rose prides itself on striving for objectivity in merit awards. They imply that they essentially have a formula. So nothing personal.

My son’s package included a $5586 Rose grant, $10875 merit scholarship, $2000 catapult scholarship and $5500 in fed loans. Still leaves a large tuition bill, but may actually be less than paying oos tuition at Purdue.

Rose-Hulman was very generous with my son’s offer. We were impressed. However, he is giong to UMBC as a Meyerhoff Scholar but I would highly recommend Rose for the merit aid!

Did anyone get over $20K (excluding loans)?

my son got 10,125 Rose Merit Scholar and13,560 in Rose Grant money.

My daughter hasn’t gotten her merit/financial aid letter yet. She most likely will not qualify for financial aid, so it will probably only be merit aid.

I wonder what it takes to get Rose Grant money?

Does anybody know the maximum merit aid offered at Rose this year?

Does anybody know the number of applications Rose received this year?

What does Rose do to decide the amount of merit aid offered to each student?

Per the RH website, merit aid is based primarily on an assessment of academics, implying there is almost a formula. Also per the website, grants are based on FAFSA. i don’t know max merit award. Perhaps the larger awards are through the named scholarships, which apparently have very specific criteria. Because I knew merit aid would be a sustantial determinant of whether S could attend a private institute, I have been combing college websites, common data sets (section H, line n), and social networking sites to know what to expect and brace son for reality.

Wowsa! Good for you (and him)! Despite claims above of aid neutrality and how $15K was above the norm, they only bridged the gap of EFC for my son. Mild interest in him at best. He may not be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I would like a school that wants him a little more than that. Onward for us and best of luck to the rest of you, be it Rose or otherwise.

I think the reason my son got grant money plus merit was because we are from Maryland, he plays baseball (GO FIGHTING ENGINEERS), very high GPA and tons of extra-curricular. We applied very early October. We never visited. We sent a copy of his 1st semester grades (all A’s, all APs) with a letter to all the schools he was interested in (this really seemed to help).

My son got approx $25000 in a combination of grant and merit scholarship. it was around $12K for one and around $13K for the other, don’t recall which was which.

I’m pretty sure the grant was due to our EFC which is around $11K, too high for federal aid, but substantially lower than the COA.

But that would still mean borrowing about $20K per year which is a lot of debt to carry that young.

As for a school that is showing no interest in my son, even though his stats put him just below the top 10% of applicants and they state that they give merit aid to 15% of applicants, Purdue didn’t give him a single cent of merit aid. However they did give $4K in aid to another student at his school with lower stats. So, Purdue got crossed off our list pretty quickly.

Now I’m hoping that maybe he’ll get some of the outside scholarships he’s applied for.
