Can someone tell me what the criteria are for merit scholarships? What SAT score and GPA do you have and what type of scholarship were you awarded?

3.95 GPA with 11 AP classes + 1 independently studied AP
2310 SAT

$5k/yr awarded

3.99 GPA, 8 AP classes + 3 independently studied (all 5 so far), 2 college classes, 35 ACT, NMF

$15k/yr (+ $1k/yr for NMF)

Don’t forget it is not just the “numbers”…your essays, passion and in-depth extracurricular activity(ies), recommendations, and the intangibles come into play.

3.9 UW, 8 AP’s, 35 ACT, 1570/1600 SAT

$10k/yr

My D had 4.0 UW/4.5 W GPA, 35 ACT, 2290 SAT, 6 AP tests with a score of 5, NMF, admitted EA, NO merit aid awarded! She is not attending. She received comments on her essay from her admissions officer, is a multisport athlete, had great recommendations, other EC’s with leadership, etc.

are they still awarding any merit? i heard they keep awarding through april…

@mamabear1234, at least she got in. My D, waitlisted RD, has 4.0 unweighted, 8 APs, math through calc BC, 800 Math2, 35(36/36/36/33)/2280 single sitting, plays half a dozen instruments, tons of music ECs, visited , sat in on classes, interviewed, spent so much time crafting the essays. Maybe the interviewer didn’t like her?

There should be no definitive GPA standards for some one get merit or even get admitted. It has a lot to do with the HS you went to and ranking within the school. The adcoms do know which school in the district is more difficult which is easier and your relative ranking based on your grade. Of course, SAT, ACT and essays are also accounted for in the decision.

I guess you’re right celeste, she did at least get accepted. I was not pleased about the no merit offered though. $2000 or $5000 probably wouldn’t have changed her final decision, $10,000 might have, but I think $15,000 would have persuaded her to attend. She did an alumni interview, which went well, and her admissions officer seemed impressed by her independent study. Oh well, water under the bridge. We are all happy with her decision.

kparcell, I have heard they award merit through April 15.
