Is there a thread on merit scholarships that someone could bump up? I'm curious about what the qualifications are.

Notre Dame does not have merit scholarships other than the Hesburg Yusko program.

loveneweng, actually there are 3 merit scholarship programs at Notre Dame: the Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Leadership Scholars Program, the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program, and the Suzanne and Walter Scott Notre Dame Scholars Program. The Stamps program offers 5 full tuition scholarships (~40k) and a 3k stipend per year. The HY Scholars rewards 25k per year and summer trips before each of your 4 years. The ND scholars program is a 25k per year scholarship plus “leadership development and enrichment opportunities.” There are also unnamed scholarships that range from 10-25k. In total only 78 of the 18,000 + applicants were offered merit scholarship so it is pretty steep chances. Hope this helps!

Btw, there are 5 Stamps Scholars, 25 HY Scholars, and 5 Scott ND Scholars per year. Those other unnamed scholarships make up the rest of the 78 there were this past year

I believe that these (and all) ND merit scholarships, although called merit scholarships, consider need as a significant factor in the award.

ND also awards roughly a hundred athletic scholarships every year. These are definitely based on merit and do not consider need at all.

My daughter has one of the Scott ND scholarships and it is not need based.

Both of our ND undergrads received merit scholarships. Except for the small “merit scholarship” we are full pay. The second kid has had their scholarship reduced each year and the reason given: reduced need. I have explored this quite thoroughly and have talked to many. I firmly believe what I have been told by the financial aid office: most if not all ND merit scholarships have a need component even if that is not spelled out in the scholarship.

Greta, I was awarded the ND Scholars merit scholarship for this next year. There was no need component to the scholarship and it will not decrease over the 4 years. Maybe the other scholarships which are not named as one of these 3 program’s decrease according to need but I am not sure. Curious, what is the name of the merit scholarship your two children received?

One of my friends is a Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar for the Class of 2017 and it is definitely not need based. He will receive the full $100,000 regardless of any changes in financial need.
