Merit Scholarships

@TSocash, My S received the acceptance letter but no menton of any scholarship. Will he be informed about merit scholarship later by e-mail or by letter?or just in MyRoc?

Son received his acceptance letter last Monday, still waiting to hear on any Merit Aid. He was a B&L science award winner so guaranteed at least $15,000 a year. Hoping to get some information soon!

@midwestblues this is from the Rochester site:
Each year, participating high schools may nominate up to four qualified students, one for each of these awards. All nominees will have their application fee waived and will be eligible to be considered for merit scholarships worth at least $7,500 per year.

my son just got his merit award, $20,000 per year. Nice award but not enough to make Rochester one of his top picks - good luck to everyone

My daughter just got her award… takes the edge off $60,000 a year…Phew! It just appeared on MyRoc this morning, one week after we received the acceptance letter. I was starting to feel a little cranky especially after she received an incredible sum today from another school lower down on her list. This does keep Rochester in the running, at least from the parent’s perspective. It is nice to feel our kid is especially wanted.

@midwestblues we are in the same boat as you. Very nice award, but we are not expecting any financial aid and cannot see paying 30k+ per year for UofR since she has some other equally strong schools that will cost much less. If she did not, we would be more inclined to consider it. We may take it off the table. She understands that a penny saved is another penny available for grad school, summer travels, etc. @nohelicopter, glad it took the edge off enough for you to keep it in play. UofR is a very good school! Best of luck!

@taben1112 and @midwestblues In the same boat as both of you in our house too. Although S was quite impressed by URoc, he has been offered significantly more merit at other schools of similar caliber so will likely pass.

My son received $13K Dean’s Scholarship…not as much as other schools, but UR still high on the list! Heading up for second visitation in April… Good luck to all the students with their decisions!

@midwestblues and @graniteStatemom you might want to have your student go into their actual FA portal. Our award on the portal is more than what was listed on My Roc. Nice surprise…but now we are calling to see what is going on. A friend has the same situation with her son.

do let us know, taben, please.

@taben1112 Thanks for the info. I will have son check.

I’ve checked myroc and cannot find anything but the merit award. On FAOnline the merit award appears as well as grants, work study, and loan. Is this what you mean by the discrepancy btw my roc and FAOnline, that my roc makes no mention of the FA package?

@jkeil911 and @ graniteStateMom we called and were told that the financial portal trumps the myroc. So our higher merit on the FA portan is the accurate amount. Wonderful.

Thanks for the update. Great news!

I can add they have a mix of computer systems that aren’t in constant communication. Completely typical, AFAIK. FA has its own system, which makes sense because they have their own algorithms and decision matrices. They have to feed information to the larger MIS - which, for example, the Bursar draws from (and I think that connection is fairly limited, since they update billing once a month). As a note, I know they enter endowed scholarships by hand so an award can show up on FA and not show up in the larger system for quite a while.

thanks, taben.

My D (international but US citizen) got admit letter in the mail dated March 7 and an email about merit scholarship (Dean’s $13K) on Mar 18. No where could I found the student ID which is required to access FAOline. I can only see the scholarship info on myROC. Could anyone tell me how to get the student ID and access FAOline? Still no formal email about financial aid. Thanks.

My son said that he received an e-mail saying that the student ID would be sent via e-mail once the FA package is ready. He applied for Priority Review but has not yet received info about other FA.

Thanks. It seems that the folks preparing the FA packages send notif are a bit behind and we’ll just have to wait for the aid notification email.

So merit aid is really obvious on myRoc? I’m not seeing anything… not eligible for need-based aid but had kinda anticipated some merit. (6 APs with scores of 5, 2350 SAT, first in class…??) Did anybody not see merit at first on myRoc, but get notified later, or is it the case that if you’re going to get it, it’s there. (Honestly, can’t even obviously see the admission decision on myRoc, but the mail version showed up today and myRoc is now at “5” whereas it had been at “4” before.) Is the admission decision supposed to be blatantly obvious too? Because if so, I am missing something!
