I’m a high school senior concerned about paying for college. I applied and was accepted to UF, UCF, and USF. UCF is offering me $30k for 4 years, the Provost Scholarship. I also applied to their Burnett Honors College and was accepted to that too. USF is offering me $22k for 4 years, and gave me automatic admission to their honors college. I just found out about my UF acceptance this past Friday, but no word on scholarships/financial aid yet. I doubt I’ll get anything, based on the reading I’ve done about UF and merit scholarships. I guess my question is, am I being silly to hold out hope for a scholarship from UF?
UF is my first choice, but it simply isn’t feasible for me to attend if I’m not getting any aid. My parents filled out the FAFSA already, and their expected contribution is $17k/year. They’ve made it abundantly clear to me that I am to finance my own education, and that I wouldn’t be getting any help from them. Right now I have a part time job as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens, but I don’t think I’d be able to make up a $17k/year deficit, on top of tuition and other college expenses.
My stats:
5.12 W GPA(calculated by my FL high school)
3.86 UW GPA
1540/2200 SAT
Ranked 2nd in a class of 754
13 AP classes completed after senior year, passed all previous exams
Following the most academically rigorous track available at my high school, took all high level math and science courses
Officer and co-founder of school’s Ultimate Frisbee Club
Member of the school’s chapter of the National Senior Beta Club
Volunteered over 300 hours
Dual-enrolled at a local technical college for my pharmacy technician certification
Now that the freshman decisions are done, the Admissions Office will go back through the applications and decide who will get a merit scholarship. You should know mid March if you have been selected.
In A similar situation as you but OOS so much more expensive for me. Your stats are really good. I think you will get something from UF although not sure you’re going to get as much as you got from the other schools.
I’m in a similar situation, plus I’m OOS. My parents are sort of pushing USF on me because they’re offering me 14k/year but I love UF a lot more so I’m not really sure what I’m gonna do
The OOS scholarships are $8k $12k and $20k (or something similar) but I don’t think it’s as high as top %20 who get it. I think it’s based on stats but definitely less than %5 imho. That’s not any official it’s just what I heard from my school they usually give it to one person and that’s it. Usually that person doesn’t even end up enrolling at UF because they have better options. (NY peeps )
@citygator I think this might be the number of scholarships offered to accepted students and the percentage would be out of students accepted not enrolled. My anecdotal information as I have mentioned applies only to my school. Only one student per graduating class is offered the sunshine scholarship and I have never heard that any of them actually enrolled at UF. Typically they are accomplished enough to be accepted to better schools.
This is similar to other programs across the country. For example, Duke’s AB Duke scholarship, which is more comprehensive than anything UF can offer, has less than a 50 percent acceptance rate. There is so much competition for the very high stat, high accomplishment students that they typically garner excellent offers.
OOS Son offered Sunshine Scholarship today via email. Accepted as an Eng. Student. UF an incredible school, hoping for additional award to make attendance a reality. From everything I have read in multiple threads, we shouldn’t expect anything else.
@NorthFLmomof2 My son is OOS. I was thinking I would see more of these scholarships here. He still has not made any decisions about school for next year. Was really pleasantly surprised by this opportunity.
My daughter is OOS, 2 time legacy and received the Gator Nation Scholarship. Still leaves us paying more than fulll instate tuition, so some tough decisions ahead.
