How hard is it to get merit scholarships at the University of Chicago? How many are available? I didn't get very much financial aid, and am now concerned about the cost. I got in with a 1550 SAT, 800/800/690, and 3.98 UW GPA and pretty good EC's and vounteer work, but dad has PhD from Stanford (will this hurt in the scholarship selection?) Any information will be greatly appreciated. For some reason, I had previously thought that they gave many third tuition scholarships and 30 full tuition scholarships. Thanks

good stats won't help you. Everyone who is accepted has that. They are looking for kids who are truly outstanding in the applicant pool - things like national or international honors.

texas137, did you apply? that would be very very exciting.

Stats are only part of the picture. They are looking to get specific types of students depending on what the old wish list has that year. My son's friend was salutatorian at a reputable private school with 1500+ SAT1s, many APs, all high test scores, great ECs and tremendous community service. She did not get one of those Boston College scholarships. Her parents were incredulous and asked who the heck could possibly be ahead of her in that line. Well, first of all she came from a "feeder" school, she came from an area that has many, many BC applicants, and though they loved those numbers, they were looking for other things. That same year, a young lady I knew in Pittsburgh got the award with a far less impressive resume, but BC really wanted the geographic spread. Also certain rare majors, URMS (sometimes), well rounded kids and females in a tech type school, athletes for D3 schools or for any school not offering athletic scholarships for the sport but wanting to have

Yeah, I really figured as much. I just thought I might ask. I am only counting on the fin aid, and not scholarships
