Merit Scholarships

I got accepted to PSU-UP and I got my packets in the mail for admission (one from PSU and one from the specific college I applied to.) When I was reading through the information provided, it seemed that all aid given by the university was need-based. The only scholarship that was of the merit type was the honors college one that was like 3500/yr. So basically what I am asking, does Penn State give merit aid, and if so, do you really need to stand out among the crowd to earn it? Thanks.

Yes, the honors college does give a $3500 scholarship and that may go up (they just received a very generous grant from the Schreyers). Beyond that, the number of merit scholarships are small. Certain departments allow you to apply for specific scholarships (Braddock (science) and Mitte (business). These are highly competitive - for example - only 10 MItte Scholarships ($5000) were awarded last year. Also, some National Merit finalists get $5000 and all get a $1000 award in the first year. Bottom line -if your profile is heads above the average PSU student, you have a chance. Good luck.
