No, students are eligible for merit scholarships regardless of when they apply. Financial aid at rice is good if you have some financial need. Make sure you apply for aid, even if you don't think you will qualify.

D got her letter today, Trustee and Century Scholar awards. She visits this weekend, hope she likes it!

anxiousmom, if you don't mind (if it's not too personal), PM me and tell me what your need-based situation is like at Rice.

I'm also interested in Clendenenator's question about whether we can still get merit aid later.. it would give me some hope. Just curious, could the people who got merit aid give some rough data describing them? I thought I had a pretty good shot.

Me too. (I know I shouldn't be so arrogant, but I had some pretty unique and good stuff)

Congrats again to all! Anyone coming to Visions?

does anyone think that, judging by your parents occupation that you are supposed to list on the common app/rice app for example, they might be able to tell whether you would be someone who would benefit substantially from a scholarship, and therefore be more inclined to offer that scholarship (whether it be trustees, centurys, etc) to you over someone, who is the child of two doctors/lawyers/father is a famous ceo/basically the child of a likely high income family. i think its an interesting question and if i were them, i would definitely give it to the kid who seemed to have a more apparent NEED for money, with lower to middle class families, and might yet not be eligible for a whole lot of need based aid, do you guys get where i'm coming from? for example, i know a lot kids in my grade who are depending on merit scholarships from schools since they wont get enough need based aid b/c of their parents' financial situation from sending older siblings to college and paying 45k a year for them, and not having anything left for their youngest kid.....

^ Eh... I thought merit scholarships were supposed to be based on MERIT only.

yeah, i'm pretty sure it's merit only.

I got mine today. Trustee and Century. If by the slimmest chance I get into Rice/Baylor and their need based aid is good, that'll seal the deal (even over Harvard's generous financial estimate).

s got full tuition plus century scholars so only a part of room and board left Outside merit scholarships to cover that if he decides this is the place.

Admissions told us in a presentation that they use merit money to recruit so best not to go ED is you want it. Unlike other schools (to be left unamed) they were at least up front about it. Some ED schools who offer merit claim they do not discriminate but it seems they do. Once you get in ED they figure they got ya.

Mine got basically the same offer as oldolddad's son, but without any outside scholarships so far.

And from what I've seen with admissions at several schools, oldolddad is right about the merit awards for ED. Both of my boys have friends who were accepted ED at various schools who, at least to me, looked to be better candidates for merit money but didn't get any, while other friends who applied RD were offered merit scholarships.

Just to counter oldolddad's experience (which is what I always assumed about merit aid and ED), I applied ED to Rice and did recieve substantial merit aid. I asked one of the admissions officers about it a couple years later, and she told me that they offer merit aid to ED students because they don't think it's fair to penalize them for applying ED. So, who knows?
