Merit Scholarships

My D was accepted EA but was not invited to scholarship weekend. Therefore, should I just assume she won't get anything and I will be paying the full ride?

Not necessarily. I received a $6k scholarship and a laptop grant and didn't get a letter until March (accepted EA).

Just curious. Did the scholarship offer come before or after you submitted the response form accepting the UNC offer of admission. Just trying to decide if its better to wait till late April to send the "yes I'm coming to Carolina" form in or just send it in now.

I'm thinking that waiting till late April is better scholarhsip offer wise (if I accept now, why would they offer me money later), but not sure if that has any negative implications for other things like housing, etc.

Invite to scholarship event came; response form accepting UNC has NOT been sent yet. (They acknowledged that they know people are waiting to see if they have scholarship offers to make decisions on school). If you are SURE you are going to UNC, then send it now. Others can correct me, but I think there are advantages to housing by sending your deposit earlier????

"warblersrule86: Not necessarily. I received a $6k scholarship and a laptop grant and didn't get a letter until March (accepted EA)."

This sounds like a financial aid grant, not a merit scholarship. Scholarship Day was solely for merit scholarships and had nothing to do with financial need. Financial aid grants/packages won't be released until probably April and has nothing to do with Scholarship Day grants.

If you applied EA and didn't receive an invite to the first Scholarship Day, it is possible that you might get an invite on the RD round, but not likely. Our table was told by a member of the admissions team that selection was done as the applications were read. Likely candidate's files were pulled as they were read for further review, then the group was narrowed down to 500, then further down to the 120 finalists. They were looking for "spark" - thinkers, not regurgitators of facts.

I can assure you that I know the difference between merit and financial aid, although UNC offered me both.

Of course, that was two years ago. I was shocked to find out that EA applicants this year received their decisions 3-3 1/2 weeks before I had. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that UNC has stepped up the pace to keep up with competition.

EDIT: After searching through my old posts, I got the letter on February 8.

warblersrule96, did you receive a likely letter before acceptance?

i got a likely letter and NOTHING else..no scholarship day invite, no merit stuff, nothing =(

Okay, mystery solved. Warblersrule - you received your award under the old system; they changed the way they give out merit scholarships last year. They instituted Scholarship Day last year as part of their effort to streamline the process and to provide some level of uniformity in decision-making (that's almost a verbatim quote). They also wanted to get results out to the finalists early, hence the late January session with decisions going out supposedly next week (1st week of Feb).

They called this "creating a feel-good zone". The phone calls, e-mails, snail-mails, invitations, having money thrown at one - this is all to create a happy, fuzzy feeling about Carolina. Let me tell you, its working!

I don't know what to think now... I received some special attention earlier on in the process. Phone call from director of admissions in december saying how much he loved my app and essays and an offer to fly me down to visit (which i'm currently following through on), followed by likely letter, phone call by director again telling me of my acceptance, etc. but no scholarship day. am i screwed out of getting merit aid now? i find this hard to believe that they would only allocate scholarships to that small pool on jan 26 and again with RD apps. grits, they started doing that happy fuzzy thing with me... but no money? i'm confused. and sad. what if i cant afford UNC now?

I received a likely letter, but I didn't get into the Honors Program. Merit scholarships and honors programs are very fickle, I think. For example, one of the colleges that didn't give me merit money was NC State (go figure).

I know of several students who applied EA last year and were not invited to the scholarship day but who definitely were awarded some merit money. I think they heard a little later on in the spring than the scholarship day students did. I don't know anything about the amounts they were offered, but I know they were offered something. So I would say just because you haven't heard anything about merit aid yet doesn't mean you should give up hope.

any other advice? see my post above

GetOuttaBuffalo,
In your specific case, I can understand why you feel the way that you do. They seemed to send you all this positive feedback, and then it just sort of fizzled.
Since they offered to fly you to CH (actually where are you?), I'm glad to hear that you are taking them up on that offer. But once you land, then what? Are you meeting a student? Are you meeting Stephen Farmer? Since he seems to have gone this far to call you twice, and fly you down to CH, I think that perhaps you should try to make an appointment with him so that you can really introduce yourself. Clearly you made an impression on him. If you can get that far, then navigate the conversation to the scholarship issue. In my opinion, Carolina sort of wears it's heart on it's sleeve. They like to hear that a student really loves who they are. You've got nothing to lose. You've already been accepted. Why not?
Good luck to you. Keep us posted.

GOO-Buffalo,
Also, at scholarship day, there were a whole lot of folks who voiced that they were still waiting eagerly to hear from other schools-like the Ivy League and such. There will be a certain percentage of these folks who will get accepted elsewhere and won't be going to CH. I'm sure that the scholarships they pass up on will roll over into the regular decision pool.
You are obviously a strong applicant. I would bet that there is a group of strong EA applicants that will be moved forward to the Spring Scholarship Day.

Is it possible for me to be included in the Spring one since I applied EA?

I am doing an explore carolina date, btw, with an overnight stay hopefully and also a meeting with the fin aid department and i guess mr. farmer too if i can since so many CCers have suggested that.
