i am an early action admit and i was wondering when we are notified about merit-based scholarships. the website says we will know by april but i was wondering if anybody else, maybe a current u of c student had a more specific answer. Or did anybody else already hear back about a merit scholarship? Do they notify if you didn't win one?

We're notified at the same time as regular admits... which I'm assuming is when they recieve their decisions.

I was told by a member of the admissions staff, last week, that everybody would hear "towards the end of the month"

"Scholarship winners who were admitted under the Early Action plan will be notified by April. All other winners will receive notification with their offer of admission."

This just blew my mind. Maybe I looked too quickly down the list of national merit schools. COOL.

Question: Scholarship provides full tuition awards to 20 highly qualified entering freshmen. Scholarships are guaranteed for four years. College Honor Scholarships cover the entire cost of tuition. Around 100 University Scholarships are given out each year, and they cover around a third of tuition.

Do you re-apply to University Scholarships every year?

Technically, you need to fill out a form every year, but you're not going to lose the scholarship. All you need is to be considered a full time student in good standing, so at least three classes with a 1.75+ GPA.

i've got a question about this - so do they give out scholarships based on someone's entire application, or just based on some really outstanding part of someone's application? for example, do they give a scholarship to someone who has an amazing application overall, or someone who has one really special part of his/her application (such as being a really oustanding musician or athlete)?

There are no athletic or music scholarships. I posted this recently in another thread, but scholarship recipients are chosen by a faculty committee out of a group of applications set aside by admissions counselors. The committee is made up of professors from different departments across the University. Someone from Admissions is present to record the votes. I don't think anyone knows how they choose, but I imagine since the committee is made up of professors, they don't pick for athletic prowness.

oh yeah i see -- i'm just saying though, do you know if they pick someone for a particularly strong aspect of the application, or just for a particularly strong application in general?

the athletics example was bad.

There's no way to know. I imagine it's similar to general admissions, though: a particularly strong point will help an otherwise "average" application, but it won't make up for anything truly lacking. Keep in mind though, these students have not only been accepted to the University of Chicago but have also been chosen for scholarship consideration--they all have strong applications overall. I imagine they also look at things deeper than grades and EC lists such as overall potential and unusual personality strengths, which can be judged through essays, recommendations, and the summation of the rest of the application.

I do know of one case for a university scholarship where the application as a whole was very strong - really excellent student overall, but nothing startling in the way of EC's. In this case, it was a friend of the family I was helping and I saw everything but the recs. That's just one data point, though.

My guess is that both sorts of excellence could be rewarded.

are scholarship notifications also going out by email? or just by post?

i'm int'l i don't want to wait!!

How much money per year does Chicago give out to National Merit Finalists who are accepted there and indicate it as their first choice school in the NMSC program?

For national merit scholarships, it's $2000 for those with financial need and $1000 for those without financial need. I don't know what the financial aid office means by "financial need"--any financial need, or over some threshold?

are scholarship notifications also going out by email? or just by post?

They come with your decision...so I guess however that comes.

I was admitted EA so I won't be receiving a decision...

Also does anyone have a link to a stats profile of someone (preferably white male) who received the 1/3 tuition merit scholarship? thanks.

Chriscap, search on this forum, you should be able to find the thread. I remember the details were depressing, though.

Your fin-aid info comes out the same time as the RD folks, I think.
