How hard is it to get merit scholarships at the liberal arts college? I am especially interested in the Moog scholarship. Are the selections based mostly on academics or more on ECs and leadership? What kind of stats would a typical Moog scholar (or any merit scholarship winner for that matter) have?

I'm interested too and would like to know the answer.

I think it is very competitive, just like all merit scholarships. I read somewhere that Wash. U. received around 1500 aplications for Honorary Scholarships last year--for around 12 (according to the website) full scholarships and 24 half-tuition scholarships. (I assume similar numbers applied to the Rodriquez and Ervin Scholarships--with some overlap). Realizing that most of this year's 22,000 applicants are very well-qualified, I assume that those who applied for merit or leadership programs felt that their applications had the possibility of distinguishing them above the rest (at least they felt it would be worthwhile to fill out the extensive scholarship packet and do another essay). But nothing is gained from not trying. From our high school, 4 are going to attend Wash. U. this fall. Two got full-tuition, and the other two got very generous merit awards. That should not be interpreted too optimistically. The four were VERY talented; but it seems that Wash. U. has money to give and uses it well to recruit talented people.

Thanks for the heads up. What school did you go to?
