Merit Scholarships

Has anyone here received one or is involved with issuing them? I don't really understand how they work, except for the fact that I had to send my app in by 12/15 and no separate app is needed. I'd rather not list my stats here, but how competative are they? I live out of state and I'm not eligible for need based scholarships.

Son received on last year for 17,000. It was a surprise (pleasant ), but they take GPA and test scores I quess. He didn't apply for anything specific. They also offered airfare for a school visit. They were very generous.

what sort of stats did he have (act, gpa, class rank) to get this merit award

His stats were good, but on this site probably average. He had 3.68 gpa 1470 (math verbal) old scale sat or new scale 2200 (with writing 730). His ACT was 34 He only had 80 in his class (small private school) so we didn't know rank except top 3 (which he wasn't).

Thanks for the insight,
Hopefully I have a chance. I have a 4.0 uw 4.12 w and am ranked 1st. I got a 32 on the ACT. The science really brought me down. I had a 34 on Math and English and a 33 on reading, but a 28 on science. I also got a 12 (highest) on writing.

They are kinda stealthy on the scholarships. I can't imagine you won't get one but I quess you never know. They also give airfare for a spring visit if your accepted. Very nice.

sideways said--

I'm in the wrong thread if a 34 ACT is average.

Kenyon is still soliciting my s to apply since common app told K that he has it in his checked colleges still.

He only has a 27 ACT.

What is he, 'yield fodder'?

--This fodder wants to know.

I never said that! No one is insulting your child!

If you are familar with this site it is filled with superhuman students. My kid is just a kid who tests well. He is very smart but doesn't like to spend his whole life studying. I can respect that. He is very happy with who he is. I I think he is fabulous and should have been accepted to every college he applied to!

I find admissions a mystery. He accepted into one top 10 LAC rejected from another. Offered a top scholarship from Kenyon and a much smaller one at American (based on sat's and gpa). You can't rely on any method of reason in this process.

That is what I'm saying. Not insulting your kid.

Sideways, where did your son ultimately choose to go, and is he happy so far?

people need to stop bugging out on these threads. everyone knows the entire college process is bs and it's not worth getting worked up over. plus, no one is trying to insult anyone, people are just looking for help and discussing their respective situations.

islandgirl he is at Wesleyan ( it was basically his first choice) and is very happy. It is a great fit. It seemed very random where he was accepted and rejected. I knew he would be accepted at Kenyon but was surprised by the scholarship. He is a great individual and the colleges that went beyond the facts and figures are the schools where he did the best.

sideways, I did not think you were insulting my kid. I just made a too-quick observation. Good luck in your search for the best fitting college.

I got a 33 on my ACT. My GPA is about a 3.9, unweighted (we don't weight). Do they look at your course selection, because I am taking the hardest courses that it was possible for me to take. Do you think I will get any merit scholarships?

You will get plenty of merit offers from schools that offer merit as long as you apply where your stats are in the upper 25% of the applicant pool.

Mandi, you should get a merit offer for sure.

Thank you.

hi, just wondering what sort of merit aid (if any) i have a chance at

When do you hear if you are a candidate by?
I'm applying to Kenyon, and brother currently goes there. He heard in mid February, but that would be now, no? Has anyone heard yet?
Thanks!

^awesome, i didn't know that they told you if you were a candidate. if you are being considered for a scholorship, does that mean you're in?

For my brother, they told him mid february and flew him out for "candidates weekend" and then let him know that he got it after.

But that was 3 years ago. Anyone know what's current?
