ST2, unless 2+2 is 6, if you count the number of full and half tuition merit scholarships offered until the class of 2011 and the actual number, you will get a reduction of 60%.

newhere - where are you obtaining your figures from? Which scholarships besides Engineering have been reduced. Do you have the latest figures for the Danforth, Ervin & Rodriguez? When you look at total scholarships for this year, I stand by my previous statement - that they have not been reduced. Like I said before, I have a problem with people making making very general statements, based on either very limited or no solid facts. In the future don't generalize about areas that you have no basis for your posts. Once again, had you restricted your post to scholarships in the school of engineering, we would not be having this discussion.

Do you know any full tuition merit scholarship non-academic, ST2? In my class there is none. Do you know have many merit scholarships without applying for Fin Aid there is in Ervin or Rodriguez? Do you know how many there were in the past?
Wash U doesn’t disclose numbers unless there are academic scholarships, and the academic scholarships had been reduced sharply.
You must have solid facts, haven't you ST2?

Trapper - yes actually I do know how many Rodriguez, Ervin & Danforths there have been over the past few years. In fact I have posted these numbers in previous years. In fact all three of these are academic (merit) scholarships that are not based on financial need. I don't understand the first part of your post - what is a "merit scholoarship non-academic"? Non academic and merit don't go together. So yes, I guess my facts are pretty good. I was wondering how long it would take for you to jump in to defend newhere.

You told people Hispanics have a greater chance and they are based on community service, that doesn't have anything to do with academics.
How many full tuition and half tuition scholarships Ervin and Rodriguez were given in 2005 in 2006, and in 2007? In my class there is none. This year they are talking of fixed amounts.
Why you don’t want people to know about scholarships at Wash U? They should know the exact number so they know if they could have a chance or not without wasting their time for nothing.

So when WashU says on their website "up to four full tuition scholarships," they really mean the up to part?

I have a question about the deadlines for this years merit scholarships. Will my application still be considered on time if I submit my application for a scholarship online before the Jan. 15 deadline, but my teacher recs don't arrive until a few days after the deadline?

Trapper - yourstatements are so ridiculous or uninformed that they don't even deserve an answer. When you say "In my class there is none. This year they are talking of fixed amounts." - I know you have no idea of what you are talking about. Why don't you check with the Ervin or Rodriguez programs and get the facts. I assume that you do know who to check with on campus. It seems that you are generally not happy at WashU - with the dorms the food etc. - but why include posting inacurate info just because you are not happy.

ST2, where are the facts? No one would tell you the numbers, would you? Could you please tell to the new applicants where can they find the information about Ervin and Rodriguez? You must have accurate info, don't you? There is no real amounts on their website, no one would tell you the amounts by phone. Is your D under one of these scholarships? Your D lives off campus, doesn’t she?

newhere - Dean McLeod is in charge of the Ervin program, I am sure he would be more than happy to provide you with any info that you asked for. As for personal questions, I would think you had more sense than to even inquire about that in a public forum.

So we ended when we started, the merit scholarships went down by 60%, real numbers are secrets, and we don’t have to publicize them. Many donors are disappointed with this policy because the applicants have the right to know how many scholarships are available to measure their chances.

You are right newhere - we are back where we started - posting generalized, false unsubstantiated info - despite the fact that I told you who to contact for exact info. Any applicant interested in more info about the Scholars programs can contact the coordinators directly. I would like to know what you base the 60% on and the statement that "donors are disapointed." But on a anonymous board, I guess anyone can post what they want - even if they have nothing to base their post on. I just don't undersatnd why you keep on making generalized negative posts based on nothing. But my guess is that you will keep on following the same patern - so it is probably best to end this exchange.

ST2, if you call, no one gives you numbers. Why they want to keep them in secret? Why they don’t disclose that very important information?

Trapper - who did you call and who did you talk to?

Sorry to derail this heated argument, but here's a logistics question about merit scholarships...

For the full-tuition ones, they ask you to complete four short answers. The instructions read:
Write an answer of 150 words or less to EACH of the following questions.

Then, for the writing scholarship, it's pretty much the same four questions except the instructions now read:
Write an answer of 150 words or less to ALL of the following questions.

What is the difference between EACH and ALL? Do they want 150 words total for the four questions when they say ALL? Because that would mean like, a sentence for each question (which is perfectly fine by me seeing as how I haven't started the application yet.)

Also, does anyone know anybody who's received any of the scholarships? I kind of feel like it's pretty futile to apply because they only give 4 full-tuition

why isn't my scholarship status showing up?

Just competitive is the Moog scholarship?

I was checking to see if my daughter's scholarship application had been received at Olin Business School and was told there are typically between 100-200 applications for the Dean's Scholarship Program, and over 1,000 for the Rodriguez. I was surprised at the difference in numbers of applications.

With regard to the Rodriguez Scholars Program, does anyone have an exact number of applications received this year?

Also, I know this may have been posted before, but how many of the Rodriguez awards are full-tuition, half-tuition, and less than half tuition?

I don't have the answer to your question MisterMavs. Since my daughter didn't apply to the Rodriguez, I didn't ask for specifics. I was told that there are 5 people invited back for the Dean's Scholarship Program, with one given a full-ride and the others partial.
