Does anyone know how and who (admissions or FAO) determines merit scholarship? My D confirmed that she was accepted to UDEL honors this morning and while we are happy that she was accepted we were expecting a little more in merit aid. Her stats are as follows:

GPA 4.68 W
5 honor classes for each of her first 3 years
4 AP classes her senior year
Class rank #2 in a highly competitive H.S. in northern NJ
SAT 1340/2050
Many clubs and activities

After all this hard work, on her part, all we were offered was 8K in merit aid. Any suggestion on how to approach the school and possible get some additional merit aid.

Also, please post your stats and merit aid amount so that we have some reference point for this years pool.

I dont know who determines scholarship but I wouldn't be surprised if you did not get a lot because of the economy school are probably trying to offer aid as much as possible and offer more in need-based and less in scholarship. also public schools and state schools offer much less scholarship, especially to out of state. 8k is a very large amount for just merit from a public school and she should appreciate and feel proud for getting that much.

im in the same but, i received absolutely no aid

98.7W
8/368
1960 / 1290
leadership and clubs galore

i was expecting a little something, especially since delaware claims to pride themselves on merit aid given, hopefully that website is inaccurate regarding aid

I believe the higher amount of merit aid is given to the Distinguished Scholars (full ride, $20,000 scholarships etc.) If your child was one of the top 100 or so applicants, they were invited for a weekend visit to UDel for overnight stay at the dorms with an interview process. Son went through the process last year and didn't get one of the full rides but a $20,000/year scholarship for four years.

With the economy as it is, I am sure the competition for merit aid is extremely competitive this year. It is happening at many of the universities as the quality of applicants have increased -- take at look at UPitt -- stats that would have gotten a full tuition scholarship last year has not resulted in full tuition offers this year. Kids with 34 ACT scores are not getting the scholarships!!!

State schools are not particularly known for their merit aid....my daughter (NJ also) received same $$ last year from UDel (not attending) and received considerably more merit $$ from privates...that being said, UDel is such a great value, with an $8,000 your COA is really reasonable if this school is near the top of her list.......(doesn't the $8,000 bring COA down around $19,000/year?)

on the website if it says i recieved no merit scholarship, is it possible that it could change in the next day or two or is that final? i havent gotten an email or letter or anything yet

I was also accepted into the Honors program. I only recieved a $5000 merit scholarship with:
104 cumulative average (not quite sure what that would be on a 4 point scale)
1350/2040 SAT
ranked #1 out of 864 students
have taken only honors classes and 5 AP classes (1 sophmore year, 1 jr year, and 3 as a senior including AP Calculus AB/BC)
I belong to many different clubs and I was vice president of the Jewish Club last year.

Based on the replies I've read here I think they are looking at your ability to pay and then just giving you enough, but not more then that. if that is true then it's not a real merit scholarship. What were your EFC's from the FAFSA? Mine was 47K

We're still waiting on a decision. I know that UD doesn't give much, but as I understand it is because the tuition is already lower than most other schools. The pool of applicants is very large and the school can and will be VERY selective in who they give their money to.

AMM91, as a parent I would give you the same advice I gave my daughter (rank of 8 of 300+, 96 UW & 1300+ SAT & was offered 3k). You would have every right to be insulted & I have trouble taking this school's commitment to academic excellence seriously. I have a relative was good at sports & they couldn't wait to back up the truck & hand her $ -close to a full ride. I know how hard it was for my daughter to rank # 8. I can't imagine the sacrifice it took to rank #1. It just sickens me how many people get big bucks because there parents don't report income, or don't work hard, or the kid can bounce a ball... & these are the kids who blow the opportunity given them -more often them not. You have an amazing accomplishment & their offer of <25% tuition is nonsense. Good luck elsewhere.

You have no idea what the qualifications of other accepted students are. How can you make blanket statements like that. I received 12k in merit aid and am ranked #1 in my class along with having an SAT of 2290. I intend on attending UDel Honors program and frankly none of us will miss you or your child (or your whining).

batgirl, those comments are completely unnecessary. For the academic standards at UDEL, which are basically average, they should be THRILLED to have a valedictorian even apply. I applaud your stats as well, but you obviously dont have much of a level/humble head. It is an insult that only 5k was offered, and am very disappointed in their merit aid altogether.
