Merit Scholarships

Do we have to fill out a CSS profile and/or to be eligible for merit scholarships? We will not qualify for financial aid.

I would say no. I didn’t fill it out and my D still received merit aid at UR.

The CSS Profile and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are required to be considered for need-based financial aid. Merit-based scholarships are determined using the same criteria we use to determine a student’s admissibility. No separate applications or forms are required.

Thanks so much for the info.

Hi MConklin,

I was just wondering if we needed to fill out this[/url”>http://enrollment.rochester.edu/admissions/apply/renscholar.shtm]this form in order to be considered for the Renaissance/Global scholarship.

Thanks for your help.

You don’t need to fill it out - you will automatically be considered and we as counselors can nominate students for the Renaissance Scholarship throughout the review process - but, a self-nomination can be particularly helpful and may help you to stand out among our applicant pool.

To be clear, it would only help my S regarding the Renaissance Scholarship to nominate himself using the linked form? It wouldn’t be viewed as him being presumptuous?

Hi - I was just wondering does Rochester offer a mix of need and merit based scholarships or is one or the other. Thank you

krmom8:

UR offers a mix of both, depending on your situation.

Thanks MADad - judging from your username sounds like you are from Massachusetts as well - we are from the Boston area. My daughther visited Rochester this summer and she loves the school.

My question was a little unclear, but I guess what I’m trying to figure out is we are in that situation that so many find themselves in just stuck in the middle financially, not overly needy but still struggling to make ends meet with an EFC that is unreachable. What I’m really trying to figure out is could a student get both need and merit based in the same package? At some schools its clearly you either get one or the other.

krmom8 - my son (a freshman now at U of R) received a mixture of merit and need based aid from U of R (and from many other schools as well).

PinotNoir - My son is still waiting for a regular decison acceptance from U of R. In the meantime, I am trying to get a sense for how closely the U of R financial aid packages go in meeting EFCs. Could you please comment on the package your son received last year? I would appreciate as much detail as you are comfortable sharing. Thanks.

krmom8:

D has both need-based and merit,for all 4 years.

Yes we are from MA–there are lots of UR students from the state. Her freshman year, they had a late summer get-together for incoming freshmen held in Wellesley. There were about 70 kids who attended.

It’s not a difficult ride from eastern MA–just a long one.

Here’s a plus–USAir flies 2-3 nonstops per day between Rochester and Logan. They take only about 1 1/4 hours, and if you buy far enough in advance, cost about $120. Very nice for Thanksgiving and breaks. At $3 per gallon, can you drive there for that much?

Wishing your daughter good luck admissions-wise, and you family good luck fin. aid-wise!

Thanks MADad - thats great to hear that there are a lot of students from MA. Thanks for the advice regarding USAIR. Now the long wait for 4 months…

Pepper03… Having your son complete the Renaissance form would not be presumptuous. It demonstrates interest in Rochester and his interest in being considered for scholarships.

krmom8… We do offer both merit and need-based aid, and we try to be as flexible as possible in making Rochester an affordable option for students that meet our admissions standards and express a strong desire to be here. Also, I am the Admissions Rep. for MA, and have made the drive at least a dozen times in the last two years - not so bad at all!

adkdad - my son’s need based financial aid package from Rochester was very generous and made it possible for our son to attend. If you’d like more details, feel free to PM me!

Hi MConklin,

I am looking forward to apply to UR this fall. When should I complete the Renaissance and Global scholarship form ? During the time when I apply ?

Mike is no longer the UR rep on this board. He’s moved on.

You can complete the Renaisssance Scholarship at the same time you apply, or you can send it in later in the fall. The scholarship application must be completed & submitted before the application deadline your application requires.

(IOW, if you apply ED, by Nov 1; if you apply RD, by Jan 1. if you apply PR, by Dec 1.)

There’s a Renaissance and Global scholarship form?

IIRC from last year applicants’ thread, you can now self-nominate for the Ren.

Didn’t used to work that way and I think is still mostly a formality.
