Merit vs. Grant

Hi. My child was accepted today. (whew) There was no mention of MERIT Scholarship but on a worksheet attached to the acceptance it referenced a "grant" of $6500 renewable each year. Is this merit? Strange way of indicating it if it is... Also should this be indicated on the portal somewhere???

It is my understanding that Grants come from a number of sources that provide money for students who meet the specific eligibility requirements for the Grant. You do not have to pay this money back (it is another form of scholarships). If the Grant is renewable every year the amount remains the same each year as long as the student complies with any requirements (if any) noted in the Grant (i.e. certain GPA requirements and many other possible requirements-it depends on the Grant). For all practical purposes the renewable Grant is similar to merit scholarships. If you go to your childs portal and click on the “My Awards and Finances” icon the Grant should be included in your child’s financial package. Congrats to your Child for being accepted and receiving the Grant.

Ahh, they just posted on the home page and yes it is a Merit Scholarship. I am shocked that they didn’t send a giant neon letter with that information. The Merit Awards at the other schools that we received were sent with more impressive packaging. This was a nice award but VERY understated. We are all thrilled though.

DS received grant AND scholarship. They were two different funding instruments.
