Merit

Son just scored a 34 on ACT (35 in 3 parts, 31 in one). He will take it twice more. He is 5/550, weighted GPA 5.1. Two season athlete, in all the usual honor societies, will graduate having taken 10 AP classes. Pitt is his number is one choice right now for chemical engineering. What is the likelihood of a generous merit award? What did those of you with similar Stats receive?

In answer to your last question, my son has an unweighted 4.0 (no weighting at his school), 2300+ SAT, 35 ACT, school doesn’t rank, and he’s taken the most rigorous course load possible (school doesn’t have APs but he’s taken a bunch of college classes at local LACs.) He got the full tuition offer.

Pitt only considers the math and english scores on ACT - the composite and other subsections aren’t

Good for Pitt Re: The ACTs. Only the Math and English score is valid-the last two are noise. Most schools don’t acknowledge that formally. Nice to see that there are some admissions departments that know something about testing.

Good to know. He got 35 in math and English.

Sorry to change the subject for a bit, but if I scored a 32 on Math and a 35 on English, would I possibly be in the running for any merit?

@hailtopitt1787 How much is full-tuition for Pitt… And what are the requirements for it?

I believe Pitt takes those subscores and uses an SAT equivelent - at least when my dd went to orientation - on her record showing placement testing - that’s how her ACT scores were represented. You can look up equivalent.

@golfstudent13, For a full tuition scholarship, the Committee likes to see that you have been participating I. The most challenging curriculum available at your school and achieving close to the highest GPA possible. Furthermore, full tuition scholars typically are very close to the highest ACT/SAT score possible.

Those who are selected for a scholarship (of any amount) will be notified by March 1st at the latest. If you are selected, your letter will clearly outline the amount and terms for your scholarship.

Best of luck!

We are excited to have received the scholarship letter yesterday-$15,000. We are OOS Ohio, Swanson Engineering acceptance, #1 school for D. Looking for information about OOS fees. We still would have approx. $15,000 left basically in OOS fees. Does this seem accurate based on others who are OOS? We plan to contact school in January but are looking for any information available now. Thank you!

@FuturePittMom, sounds about right, in the above link the OOS engineering tuition is listed at $30,660.
That’s just the tuition. Then you would need to figure about $1,000 for fees and about $11,000 for room and board.

@golfstudent13, full tuition would cover the tuition cost for the school you attend for 8 semesters, so for Arts and Sciences it’s $17,292 for an instate student. Fees and room and board are extra.

@FuturePittMom Would you mind if I asked what your D’s test and grade stats were?

Sure-D was 33 ACT, 35 on M and R, NMeritCommended, 1460 SAT, private school(no ranking of students) so a bit limited on AP classes but currently in 3 AP-incl Physics and CalcBC. Many Honors classes. EC are mostly in the ARTS-highly recognized Orchestra that performs with nationally known musicians, Theatre, Dance, usual community service, solid academics(all As) and extensive music experience.
