Merits of community colleges

Is it preferable to go to community college rather than a four-year college, even though you have the grades and money necessary to attend a four-year college from high school?

Community college classes are much easier to get As in and cost less to boot. This, I believe, is a boon for premed students, who need the high GPA and money for medical school afterwards. But is the "freshman experience" really worth that much compared to GPA in the end?

Is it worth it, then, to drop out of a four-year college after the freshman year and continue the sophomore year at a community college?

That's tough, I went to a four year school first semester and transfered to community college at the break just because I realized that my career plans were different than I thought they were when I went in and the school I was at wasn't going to get me there. I'm really happy with my decision. I had a great "freshman experience" and made great friends first semester and now I'm taking 22 credits (for free!), tutoring refugee kids, writing for the paper and having a great if geeky time foccussing on academics.

The problem with pre-Med is there are some med schools (I know University of Michigan is one of them) that won't accept pre-reqs from CCs. Also, transferring and leaving all your friends is a big pain in the butt but its an option worth looking into.

Thanks wandergirl for the reply! Anyone else have any comments?

I would avoid the extra transition you will have to go through by choosing to attend community college.

Now that you are in a four year school...like boowooj said, I would avoid the extra transition....I however did the same thing that you thought about...I decided to do my whole first yeat at a cc because of the cheaper tuition and I was able to get my Associates in 1 year...this way I can save up for my last two years and Med School to follow...I think that it is a great idea to do this but then you limit yourself on where you can go to med school because it is true that some schools do accept cc pre-reqs...that said, if you are interested in med school I think it would look better to stay where you are and not go through the transition back to a cc and then back to a four year school....plus, you will have way more options for med school

I did what wandergirl did...I left my 4-year school after the fall semester and I love that I did it. Cheaper tuition (which my parents LOVE by the way) and where I live, you're automatically accepted into any 4-year university of your choice (guarenteed acceptance, but not guarenteed if you have a "limited access major" like I do :()

About the "freshman experience" part, I didn't really enjoy my "freshman experience" at my other school. It wasn't what I wanted and it felt like my 13th year of high school, but that's just me. Best of luck!
