Merrill College of Journalism

Does anyone know how the journalism school at Maryland is? And the difficulty of getting in? I heard it was difficult, but I applied priority deadline and will most likely get accepted at UMD anyway.

My son is a journalism major at UMD. He was accepted directly into the program, and is doing very well. He’s a sophomore, so isn’t too far into the journalism curriculum yet. The first two years are mainly CORE classes and electives, with 1 or 2 journalism classes per semester.

What are your stats?

Diane–I love your screenname. Way to focus on your goal!!!

Composite ACT was a 29 with a 30 in english and 32 in reading*. GPAs on the lowside its a 3.8 weighted.

Which Journalism major are you pursuing? I know that UMD just opened a new journalism building, which is great for us incoming freshmen. I did a Journalism program at UMD this summer and the Journalism faculty is superb…experienced, helpful, pretigious, too. My professor was a longtime writer/editor for the Baltimore Sun. The Journalism program is nationally-accredited and I’m looking forward to hopefully attending UMD as well! I plan to major in print journalism.

Here are my stats incase you wanted to know:
(High School Senior)
ACT:29
GPA: 4.15
Rank: 19/350

Looks like we both probably have a good shot.

i was addmitted into the Journalism program too…i was surprised b/c my SAT was on the low side and i didnt take any ACT’s
math: 520
Writing:620
CR:580
however, i did mention a deep passion for journalism in my essay, so keep that in mind!
