MESAS/Interdisciplinary Double Major

Like many of you out there, I'm heading down to Emory next year. I was looking through some academic info pages on the site and noticed that you cannot triple major at Emory. No biggie, definitely wasn't planning on it anyway. I also heard that you can't double major with a minor...that's kind of lame, as I was planning on double majoring in Applied Math and Middle-Eastern Studies with a minor in Econ. Apparently that doesn't work.

However, I've found an alternative route to completing this - the BA in Mathematics and Econ joint degree, and a separate major in Middle-Eastern Studies. Is this against the Emory rules, or will I able to do this while fulfilling the elective requirements and such?

Thanks.

Anyone with any answers?

you will not believe this but I am considering the EXACT same thing and was wondering if it is allowed.....(however I will only take that path if i do not get into the business school)

Are you Middle Eastern? or are you just interested in it?

I'm from Russia, actually, but Middle-Eastern culture fascinates me beyond all belief. With the steady growth of the Middle-East and the region's incredibly rapid industrialization processes, one can't really go wrong with the major. Arabic and Chinese, in my opinion, are by far the most important world languages, and personally, I like Arabic a hell of a lot more.

I don't really plan on applying to the business school, so this is a definite for me barring any blockades.

I think you will find that as you meet professors at Emory and excel in certain classes, probably anything is possible. If you are the right person to mix certain majors and minors, you will be able to find a professor to help you work it out even if it hasn't been tried before.

BTW, my freshman D loved her MES class last semester -- it was a very small intimate class and the professor was amazing. My D is pre-med and will probably major in International Affairs. She loves math so is thinking about combining her major with something in economics.

Good luck with figuring it all out.

If I had to guess, I would say that you can't do a joint major plus another major. The main reason is the general education requirements. Assuming you come in with 0 AP/IB credits, a normal course load is 32 credit hours. There are 16ish courses for GERs and the econ/math joint major is another 16-18 classes. There's no room to take another major. But it's always something you could ask about.

dgeball, keep in mind that many of the credits overlap some econ classes cover GER requirments and some MESAS classes cover them as well....

The GERs are undergoing a revision where that may or may not still be the case. In any case, from the wording of the course catalog, it sounds to me like they won't allow it.

I'm going to have a slew of AP credits though, having taken 13 AP exams.

Yea, but the policy is College-wide. It's not based on each person's case. Email the department chair in either the econ or math dept. They would know better than me. There's also a "ask faculty" subconference on Connect 2012, which is the admitted student learnlink conference. The CD should be included in your acceptance packet. It's also available at software.emory.edu but you need a login ID to get it. So I don't know if that will work yet.
