I’m a little nervous about this, and any insight would be highly appreciated. I’m an appointee, ready to go off to the Academy. I recently turned 21, and I drank too much to celebrate. Basically, I had to go to the hospital for over-drinking to get my system flushed out, and my insurance provider is Tricare… military coverage. Basically, I’m going to pay the bill upfront and hope to be reimbursed by my insurance company. I was treated at a military facility, also, but they assured my comrades that the incident would not be reported directly to USAFA. I’m not sure if I should self-report this, expect it to be discovered by USAFA, etc. What should I do? Technically, there is nothing illegal about the incident, but… it doesn’t feel good. In fact, when they looked up my insurance information, they told my friends I was listed as “active duty.” I’m not sure where the claim is being sent at this point… are we already covered by USAFA? Does that sound like a bad thing for me???

Hmmm. You are 21, so yeah, it's obviously not illegal. This is a tricky one. First off, I'm pretty sure that USAFA will not find out about that. Someone there would have to directly let them know, and that's probably not going to happen. Secondly, I don't think that it would be a legal type issue (as in reporting breaking a law or something like that), it's more of a medical issue. I would say that you should call up and ask your admissions counselor first, before officially reporting it in any manner (if that's what you are advised to do).

Youre good man USAFA won't pick up on that, plus you were legally drunk so even if they did find out I don't see how they could make a big deal out of it. Maybe a the extreme worst you get some extra alcohol training.

Please, legally drunk is still just drunk. I've seen a lot of men abuse alcohol and I've seen alcohol abuse a lot of men (and their families). Hope you will understand when I urge you to deal now with the much larger problem of responsibility. Back into "dad" mode. Will hush now.

Well, to be fair, he didn't indicate that he has a problem with alcohol, he just said that he had a tad too much while celebrating his 21st birthday, a relatively easy thing to do.

"...he had a tad too much while celebrating his 21st birthday, a relatively easy thing to do..."

It's easy to get carried away, if you're not careful about it.

Dont drink, alcohol is bad.

The fact is, we all have a problem with alcohol - even if we don't drink.

If you're AD status and are treated at an MTF, there is no claim...it's not sent anywhere.
