Because they found out that naming a ship “Schiphol” did not inspire much confidence in the ability to complete the cruise.

Could “se pendre” do the trick as in “Give enough rope and he’ll hang himself.”

And it seems that the verb “to perjure” is a good candidate as well, as it is hard to perjure someone else than yourself.

What is this supposed to mean?

“Pls. do the needful” drives me nuts whenever I read it in an e-mail.

And how do you quote a prior post so that it appears in the shaded box?

See [BBCode tags reference](BBCode tags reference)

Apparently, it means "Please do whatever is necessary ….”

(quote) “Pls. do the needful” (/quote)

OHMomof2–I am not confident I have entered this correctly, but thank you for attempting to educate me! I still don’t have any idea what “please do the needful” means.

As expected, I did not post that quote thing correctly. Oh well. Thank you nonetheless.

Krlilies–thank you for the explanation.

To quote, you want to say [noparse]
[/noparse]. Square brackets, not parentheses. :)

Leafblade—thank you. Had to pick up my little wireless keyboard to even discover that I had square brackets!

Yeah, I am just going to abandon the idea of quoting in a shaded box. Too embarrassing to persevere at this point.

And the second

needs the forward slash inside the square brackets.

Welcome to the world of HTML-derived code ;)

ETA: Don’t worry! It took me months to figure it out.

My thirteen year old is teaching himself C++ and maintains the HS’s PTO website on my behalf. I cannot let him know about this. I am going to go away and practice quoting and back slashing but will save the other readers of this post from having to read any more of my ramblings. Thank you!

Just try to type exactly what is below.

[noparse]

I think that is a reflexive verb–good job! I can’t think of a use of it as a verb that wouldn’t include the reflexive pronoun. (You can refer to “perjured” testimony, of course.)

My MIL consistently uses “he done” and cannot use was/were correctly. She was an elem. teacher for 30 years! H does it too and it drives me nuts. How difficult to know if the subject is singular or plural?

The average age of teachers at our HS is < 35 and the grammar, written or spoken, is atrocious. Administration is no better. The communication they send makes me cringe. They do not teach grammar in school anymore. That makes me sad.

I’ve lived in southern, central and northern Indiana and I can think of few people that say “to be” when the dishes, clothes, or car need washed or the grass needs cut :)

Initially I posted about spelling errors, but poor grammar and usage really bother me and this is not only true, but I wrote to the Admissions Office of CMU because I was so taken aback… Both of my d’s applied to CMU and were admitted but not with merit money to make it competitive with other packages. When we were touring schools with younger d at the end of August prior to her senior year, I called CMU to find out about visiting and tours. I was told" We ain’ t giving no tours".
Having nothing to do with grammar and usage, but I was insulted by the admissions office at Emerson. Younger d was a junior in college, it was parent’ s weekend for older d at Brandeis and it happened to fall on Columbus Day so it was a three-day weekend. I called to find out about tours and the admission office proceeded to berate me because it was going to be a holiday and they would be closed along with every other school in the Boston area. I knew that was inaccurate as Brandeis was hosting their fall open house on Columbus Day and several of younger d’s camp friends were coming from NJ for that event. Additionally, we had already scheduled a tour with BU. I asked the person in the Emerson office if they did not consider either Brandeis or BU to be schools in the Boston area or not. Needless to say Emerson did not make it onto younger d’s list.

Just got an email inviting student to what they called an exclusive honors college event for accepted students. Was a little surprised to see signing off at the end of the email the signature line of the email sender:

^Glad you wrote to CMU, can’t imagine who was answering the phone that day, but in four years, I never heard anyone, or got any mail from them, that had grammatical mistakes that I noticed.
