Message to Bernie

Yo wazzup Bernie Mac!

Yo man I wanna thank you fo your posts- Ive heard that you are the person to talk to. I am seriously thinking about applying early decision to Emory and want to go to medical school at Harvard or Stanford. So I am thinking about doing NBB because I hurd it was the best major to do for pre-meds. I don't want to wast e my time doing tough courses and want to do whatever it takes to get into a top medical school. I heard that NBB was considred one of the tough majors already and pre-med stuff is going to be really tough, rite, so I want to take it easy elsewhere. Do you think NBB is the best major for me?

Also, I am wondering how the party scene is at Emory? What do you for fun, for example? I love to drink and have a good time and how are the females like? Can people get away with smoking in they rooms or are they pretty hardcore about that? Is there a particular frat that you love to go to, especially black frats? I love to beatbox so I need to find a school that can accomodate me.

What courses do you think I should take freshman year. I alrrudy have AP credit for bio 141 so i was planning on taking human fizz cuz I heard that it was a good course to take for premeds and was useful to get into Harvard or the like. I heard you can just not go to class and get As anyway, is that really true? Also, I heard that freshman orgo is terrible and that its not a good course to take for premeds. Im really not interested if that is the case.

I've read that you are taking on some freshmen to mentor this year and was wondering if I could be one of them. Im pretty new to the South area so I don't know too many people. I had not even heard of Emory until I looked at the rankings and saw that it was ranked higher than all of the schools in Georgia. IS this really the case, I heard that Georgia tech is too hard and is not worth it, so I can't apply there (the reason I say Georgia is because my woman is moving to Atlanta).

Thanks for your help, bernie. Peace, brah!

For one, for natural sciences Georgia Tech isn’t hard (for engineering it is of course. Natural sciences at Tech is by and large easier than Emory IMHO and from my observations comparing the coursework). For two, NBB isn’t tough either (it’s like the easiest natural science here) and it certainly cannot claim to be the best “pre-med” major (The fact that you or anybody believes there is such a thing is sketch. Coursework wise, biology or chem. is actually superior. GPA wise, sure NBB/Anthro. are pretty good. Overall, pre-med is not a major. You major in your interest and take pre-med requirements/recommended courses. That’s all to it. Not hard to fullfill those reqs.). For 2, it’ll take more than some easy science courses to get into a top med. school. For 3, of course there are parties, drinking, and smoking if that’s your primary focus. I suppose the girls are what you make of them. Class of 2015 had more attractive girls than normal. As long as you don’t make a scene harming others, no one cares. Lastly, it’s questionable if you’re serious about being a doctor if you are merely shooting for Stanford or Harvard. Let’s just stick w/“I want to go to med. school”. Getting into H or S (or any selective) will take standing out by doing VERY awesome things and taking tough courses and a lot of luck, not partying (I like to do this sometimes, but am intensely academic) and “taking it easy” (your MCAT will be low that way as well). The fact that you worry of a school being “too hard” (unless it is like MIT or Caltech) and not wanting to take tough courses cast doubt on motivation to get into H or S. Please consider that. Don’t take offense. My observations on those who got into schools like that (or are well on the way) tells me you may need to alter those ideals. They liked to have fun some times, but were some of the more serious (not cut-throat. Just those that liked their academic work and were serious about learning) students who did take the hard classes even when they didn’t have to for the major or pre-med in general, and managed to awesome things out of class. Needless to say, 1/2 of their time did not go to partying. If Tech is more affordable, I honestly recommend it. As good as Emory is, it may not be worth freaking 50k+(especially on some false grounds that pre-med here is easier than Tech. Good luck w/that assumption. The differences are more so environmental than academic).

Also, I believe phys. requires bio 142. The only class that I know lets people in w/o are organismal form and function and maybe genetics.
