I am a recent transfer student to Hunter College. I am aspiring to be a medical student, however, my grades aren't doing so well. I have about 35 credits transferring over to Hunter but I received an F in one of them.

I was trying my hardest and I just didn't understand. The F totally lowered my GPA into a 3.0 and I was wondering what I should do. I can't retake the course because I JUST transferred out. I can retake it in hunter though. Registration for classes at hunter is in a few days.

I really want to get into med school. The course was Organic Chemistry. Is there a chance that I can choose not to transfer over any credits at all and start anew at hunter? I don't care about the time I wasted I just want the best chance to get into med school.

If not, should I just retake that course over in hunter college, try harder, and hope the med schools forgive me?

What is your opinion on what I should do?

If choosing to not transfer credits is doable, I'll take that option and I really mean it if all those credits go to waste, I just want to get into med school and I'm not letting that one F stop me.

You need to retake the class at your new college. When you apply for med school, every college course you ever took (even during HS) counts in your calculated gpa.

Please go to the PreMed Topics forum and read some of the sticky threads about coursework, etc.

^^ Org Chem is always a weed out class for pre-med. If you cannot pass it with flying color, you will have a problem getting into med school. If you have been accepted by the new school, you must get an A on the retake over there. Otherwise, consider another major, like bio-stat.

I would suggest posting on the PreMed forum, there are an amazing number of experienced members there. If you don’t already know, gpa and MCAT score are extremely important for med school, much more than gpa and testing for UG. New grades do not replace old grades, they are just added into the gpa calculation, so you can’t afford to get many low grades and retake.

If you never request the transcript they will never get the grades. Not sure if they will follow up on it or happily let you take 4 years at their school. You will be retaking everything though and wasting $.

Your gpa might start fresh at Hunter, but the transfer grades will also show, even if they are not used in the calculations. Also, the med school will ask about all your colleges and want all the transcripts so you really can’t hide it…

Are you near the first school? Any chance of retaking it there in the summer???

“You are an adault now, should not be spoon feeded by others all the time.”

I’m sorry but I am offended by that. Firstly, It’s my first time here and to my knowledge, premed is a undergraduate set of requirements designed for medical school. I didn’t think it would fall under professional and graduate schools.

Secondly, on the front page of the forum there reads no “professional and graduate school” link. I do appreciate the help you have supplied me and don’t get me wrong, I did try to find the premed site, but with only 2 days left until my registration, I am at my peak with exhaustion and stress.

OK everybody, let’s all calm down and try to help each other out. Sorry I didn’t give you the link, I can see the forum (and know where it is ;)), but realize that sometimes subforums are obscured by higher level categories.
