I don't know if I put this in the right thread so I'm sorry if I didn't...^___^;;

Ok, so my sophomore year last year in school did NOT go well.
And by that I mean, from first semester having a GPA of 3.6, to getting a 1.7 second semester- evening out to a GPA of 2.3 something for my highschool GPA so far (we don't use freshman year and I'm currently a junior.)
BUUUUT, I didn't just slack off in school, there was a MAJOR reason that my grades went down so much.
And for the purpose of asking for help I'll just say it; in my second semester my sister attempted suicide so we were on constant watch with her and trying to hold on to the rollercoaster that was life. Also, I feel I should put in that I'm constantly harassed and it got so bad my sophomore year I would constantly skip school because I was so depressed so I got so behind in school that it was impossible for me to catch up.

After all that I'm trying my hardest to pull up my GPA and my grades this year. If I went from always getting amazing grades, to ONE bad semester to getting really good grades again, would colleges notice that there was a change and that soemthing might have been wrong?

Also, I ended up failing 3 classes (which is why my GPA is SOO low) but I'm retaking 2 and hopefully getting an A in them this year, which will cancell out my GPA from last year for those classes and bring my GPA up to a 2.9 for that year.

You should definitely include your circumstances for the second semester of sophomore year in the Additional Information section of your application. If you maintain strong grades and keep up your activities and such, I’m pretty sure colleges will understand.

Colleges will absolutely understand this. You can definitely get back on track and get into good schools. cocbanaa is right, you’ll just explain in your college applications. Get to know your GC and a few teachers at your school really well this year so they’ll be in a position to write great recs for you next year.

Ah, thank you guys. (: I’ve been really worried with all this talk about colleges and stuff in school.
I guess I’m not really shooting SUPER high, and every good school I’d even look at has at least 3-5 family members who have gone there (I.e. Berkley, Harvard, Welsley, Babson).

It sucks because my teachers last year didn’t understand what I was going through so that made it even worse to keep up.
But, I’m also very involved within my school (speech/forensics team, Knowledge bowl, student council, Principals advisory board, drama, orchestra, choir, etc) so hopefully that will all help. xD

Also, if I get really good scores on my SAT and ACT will that help?
Like, lets say I get a 30 (which all my practice tests have gotten around that score, and I’m studying more) and a 2000 on my SAT (its out of 2400, right?) would that help a lot?

yes, high scores will definitely help balance it out. also, if you explain the reason for your grade drop, a lot of colleges recalculate gpas to make the weighted gpas equal, and they would probably take your circumstances into account and maybe not count that semester when they’re recalculating
