Met Requirements for ACG Grant But Did Not Receive One

I met the requirements for the ACG Grant but I did not receive one because it doesn't show up on my financial aid package. My need has not been met so how come I wasn't awarded one? Should I make a phone call?

The ACG cannot technically be awarded until you graduate and they get your final transcript to prove that you had a rigorous curriculum or honors diploma.

Some schools listed it on my award with an asterisk to show that it was pending. The school I will be attending did not include it on the FA award and when I called they told me I would get a revised award in June after the transcript comes in.

You can call to verify, but thats probably what they’ll tell you.

Oh ok I see. Yeah my friend told me he had an ACG Grant in his financial aid package but he didn’t say whether it had an asterisk or not.

All ACG’s are “pending” if they are on your financial aid letter now. That is because the regulations require a final high school transcript with proof of graduation. If you do not provide it, your award will be canceled. Also, you must meet the requirements for classes - many students who think they do actually do not.

This year, students had to take at least 12 credits & had to be U.S. citizens to receive ACG. That is actually changing for 2009-10. ACG will pro-rate depending on number of credits (but at least half time is required) & all students eligible for federal aid can also be considered for ACG. Another thing to remember: ACG is only for Pell eligible students. If you are verified & your EFC changes so that you are no longer eligible for a Pell, you also lose the ACG.

Another ACG fact that is new for 2009-10: If you have a ton of AP credits & get sophomore standing when you begin college, you ay not ever be eligible for an ACG award. This is because ACG is Year 1 (freshman) and Year 2 (sophomore). If you begin as a sophomore, you will never get Year 1. And to get Year 2, you must have at least a 3.0 at the end of Year 1. Since you have no grades for Year 1, you will will not get Year 2 … unless you transferred in some dual-degree grades & had at least a 3.0. And you can’t qualify for Year 2 using grades that were earned during Year 2 (they have to be from BEFORE Year 2).
