Ok so I'm wondering what kind of benefits I get for being Methodist and applying to Duke. Will it help me get in? Will it get me any financial aid maybe?

I'm not particularly outstanding otherwise, but I'd say I'm also as qualified as many of the other people who get into Duke. I'm just wondering if, since we Methodists aren't an overly large group, my religious affiliation will do anything for me. I'm the only one my age who even attends service on a regular basis at my church.

I can't imagine it would matter in the least, unless you try to use it, in which case it will definitely hurt.

In other words, your being a Methodist isn't a plus or a minus. Your writing an essay talking about how Methodist you are and how nobody else your age goes to church will be a minus.

I don't think it would hurt chessgeek's application- especially since Duke offers scholarships for it.

United Methodist Scholarships. A number of United Methodist Scholarships are available on a basis of demonstrated need to Methodist students who have given evidence of leadership in their local Methodist Youth Fellowship groups.

Are you sure these are Duke offered? Or are they offered by a Methodist church, and Duke simply helps pass the information along?

I don't know. I quoted from the undergrad bulletin. I put down Catholic on my app, and Duke is 20% Catholic. Religious activities were a considerable part of my ecs.

I think if word got out that putting down affiliation with a particular religion would strengthen a Duke application, there'd be hundreds of kids trying to pass off as being Methodist, Islamic, Buddists, or whatever.

Is that true that 20% of the undergrad is Catholic?
