Hello, current high school junior here. Could anyone please explain the differences between the Meyerhoff program and the Honors College? Are they mutually exclusive, and if not, should someone apply for both?

Thanks for all the help!

Hello, current high school junior here. Could anyone please explain the differences between the Meyerhoff program and the Honors College? Are they mutually exclusive, and if not, should someone apply for both?

Hey!

I’m a rising junior Biochemistry major and Meyerhoff scholar at UMBC, and while I was admitted to the Honors College, I decided to not pursue that due to personal reasons. Being a Meyerhoff and being an Honors student are definitely not mutually exclusive, although the requirements for both programs are at times at odds.

The Meyerhoff program is geared specifically to producing more PhD’s and MD/PhD’s in the STEM fields, especially for underrepresented minorities. However, you don’t have to be a URM to receive the scholarship, so long as you are going to promote the importance of cultivating more minority scientists.

The Honors program is geared more towards creating well-rounded students through various honors sections of courses. It leans very heavily on the arts and humanities, though there are STEM majors doing well in the Honors program as well.

If both of the above apply to you, you should absolutely apply for both! Be sure to complete the application by the early deadline for consideration for both programs, though. And if you have any questions about the Meyerhoff program, feel free to send me a PM!
