Meyerhoff Scholars Selection Weekend

cugirl25 - Congratulations!!! What wonderful news. PM me and I will be happy to chat with you.

Rejected. Is it still possible to do well without the meyerhoff? I didn’t really want the scholarship for the money just for the opportunities, oh well. Does anyone know if students can still be a part of the meyerhoff but without receiving money?

You cannot be part of the Meyerhoff program without being a Meyerhoff. HOWEVER…you can stilll be very sucessful at UMBC. My son has made lots of non-Meyerhoff friends who are doing well at UMBC. One big plus UMBC has is the Shriver Center. They are very helpful in obtaining internships and jobs once the student graduates. UMBC is very hands-on with their students. They want the student to do well. Once example…when my son was drafting a resume and statement for his internships, he went to the UMBC writing center without an appointment. He waited 10 minutes…and a counselor sat with him for over 30 minutes going over all his goals, his resume, etc. and working with him to improve it. Now…he knew about this service because of Meyerhoff…but it is open to any UMBC student.

So, non meyerhoffs can only get internships after they graduate?? While meyerhoffs can get internships during college? Also, I read on the website that students can apply to be a friend of the meyerhoff, do you know if that’s true?

Thank you for the response btw.

sorry for the confusion…everyone can apply for internships during their tenure at UMBC – thru the Shriver Center. PLUS…they help graduates after the graduate as well. A friend of the Meyerhoff program I don’t believe happens anymore…they used to do Meyerhoff Affiliates…but some people abused it…so no longer.

My main point is…I think it would be well worth your student to still consider UMBC even without Meyerhoff as the school is amazing and very helpful and hands-on! They have excellent academic advising for all of their students. The research and internship opportuntities are there if your student is willing to do the work and apply (and regularly visit Shriver to see what is available).

Any UMBC student can apply for internships. As proudmom1313 mentioned The Shriver Center is a tremendous resource. They maintain a listing of co-ops and internships for students. UMBC provides tremendous support and is in the top five with respect to undergraduate education. I do believe that you can apply to be a friend of the Meyerhoff program after matriculating at UMBC. I would call the Meyerhoff Office to confirm that.

Thanks, again. I was wondering do meyerhoffs and non meyerhoffs that have equal stats have the same chance of getting an internship, or are meyerhoffs given priority?

Thanks for all the help.

anyone can apply to any internship. There are specific internships that historically always hire Meyerhoffs not just based on their stats, but on the reputation of the Meyerhoffs who came before them. I also think being a Meyerhoff helps the students get recommendations from professors…but any smart student who got to know the professor and went in during office hours, etc…could do the same thing. If a non-Meyerhoff worked hard, got involved, did some research on internships, got to know two professors really well, spent some time at Shriver Center, got into some study groups…they would do amazing at UMBC!
