Miami of Ohio Deferral - Is there still hope?

My son is devastated, his choice Miami deferred him. Does anyone here know the odds of Miami's deferrals? He has started his letter with the updated information that the deferral letter stated needed to be in by 2/15. Does anyone here have any advice for U of M specifically? Just thought I would ask...

Worried Mom...

Sorry to hear about the deferral; this can be a really tough time of year. No advise for Miami specifically, but you might see if your son's GC can ferret any more information out of them: sometimes that can provide a clue as to how to tailor the update.

Once the update is completed to the best of his ability and submitted - forget about it, get enthusiastic about other options. I don't know what Miami's numbers are like, but in general the odds on acceptance after deferral aren't so hot.

make sure he writes a good letter ssaying its his first choice and stuff and turns it in on time with a record of his semester grades along with any other achievements /awards

its already kinda late for UM but you could give it a shot ...

Thanks to you both. His GC is worthless! She's probably one of the reasons why he was deferred since she took so long in getting her letter of recommendation to them and then acted like it was UM's fault because she isn't familiar with how they do things. It was very frustrating getting her to do anything for this application. We are out of state and she was not familiar with the Ohio college admission form.

He has gained more achievements and awards. His GPA is not the issue, his ACT possibly is (he is just below UM's average- took it twice and did worse 2nd time around) so that is worrisome.

Thank you for the info. We'll cross our fingers for UM, finish up the letter and get it in and focus on his backup school (MUCH cheaper).

Here's what they report:

Qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list:
1,777
Applicants accepting a place on waiting list:
701
Students enrolled from waiting list:
556

Thanks Weenie. There is a glimmer. Thanks again.
