Ok so I am a senior in High School and I am strongly considering applying ED to Miami U. I have done extensive research, been in contact with people at the school, and am about to go tour the campus and have heard nothing but great things. Even one of my teachers who went to Harvard was praising it. I am just wondering why it is not more of a highly regarded school out here on the west coast and why it is not higher ranked. I am not going to choose a school based on name recognition I’m choosing based on best fit but I’m just curious.
It’s not more highly regarded because it’s in the midwest. Make sure you run the Net Price Calculator on the school web site to see if your family can afford the school.
It’s easy to recommend Miami as a desirable school to attend, but by average student SAT scores, the college falls outside the top five within its home state. (The same is true for Cal-Berkeley, btw.) By a fair standard, then, the school, while well recognized in my opinion, justifiably should face a good amount of competition for this recognition. I hope you like your visit and continue your interest in Miami.
@1qwert - My son is an Honors freshman from Arizona at Miami. His roommates are from Northern California and DC-area Virginia. I talked to the parents from California and asked them why Miami? They had all the usual answers, great school, focus on undergraduates, nice campus, etc. But one answer surprised me. Mom said that it is very difficult to graduate from a California university in less than five years. So they compared the cost of four years at Miami to five years at a Cal university. Then, there is a year of missed wages from starting a career one year later. Dad is a Berkeley grad too.
Average ACT scores 2014
OSU 28.8
MU 28.4
There isn’t much difference and MU has a much higher graduation rate.
