miami(OH) for minorities

Im a black male who is thinking about attending miami university of ohio but needs to clear things up. I know miami has great academics and its close to my real hometown where all my friends are (Brownsburg,IN) but i am hearing some terrible things about minority and non-greek student relationships. Can anybody give me some info and i dont want anything from a book source b/c ive read them all. I prefer personal experience or experience of a friend.

terrybhs06....I cannot help you with the minority aspect of your question. I can tell you that when I attended Miami (in the dark ages....1977-1981) it was as greek as I'm sure it remains today. I did not join a sorority or any of the "little sis" programs of the fraternities. I had plenty of involvements in other extra-curriculars, and plenty of friendships with non-greeks, and with greeks. There was never any pressure to join. I had a great experience there....got a great education at Miami. I recommend it.

what kinds of things about minorities? I'll be applying this year (black female) and my dad attended there as well (late 70s/early 80s i'm guessing).

well i come from an almost all white suburb so i have no problem with other races but i have heard that the students at miami treat the black and latino kids like they are just there b/c they are minority and they arent as good as the white students, i have also heard that the greek community thinks that they r truly gods and look down on everyone else (I'll probably end up being a greek but this still concerns me) I've been told if your not greek or friends with a lot of greeks its hard to have fun and i have also heard that there quite a few snobby racist kids at miami

I hear that Carnegie Mellon, Ohio Univ. and OSU are great schools for minorities.

yes Ohio univ. is definitely without a doubt the greatest school on earth im going there unless something ridiculously bad happens and i dont get accepted

Go Bobcats!

And, if you're interested in engineering--when we visited Miami this summer, the engineering building was under construction. It's a very new program, I haven't heard what their focus is on.

I've only been on campus for a few weeks, but I'm Asian (about as equally underrepresented), and I haven't had issues with discrimination... definitely a change from high school. I've never heard of any black or Latino students being harrassed or anything like that. As for Greeks, well, they're everywhere on campus to be perfectly honest, and they seem to be pretty friendly. I haven't had any extremely positive or negative interactions with them. It's not hard to have fun if you're not Greek... there's the AfterDark program, which is a non-drinking alternative for the weekends, and there are always things to do with people in your corridor.

Also, if you are admitted to the Honors Program or Oxford Scholars, the students in that residence hall are VERY open to multicultural things.

(If any of this post is garbled, I'm having keyboard trouble and it keeps copying and pasting things into what I have already typed!)
