Miami or Eastman for Jazz

with or without a double major in math or psychology?
Which would you recommend?

I don't know anything about the jazz program at Miami, but Eastman has a terrific jazz program - one of the best.

Since Eastman is part of the University of Rochester, which has a strong academic profile in psychology and math, I would think that may be the better choice.

The Eastman degree is a better degree, by far. To me, there wouldn't be any question at all which to choose, unless you like to tan a lot!

Miami is a more integrated environment for music + academics, all on one campus. Eastman students have to travel a bit to U Rochester. My son just visited and it seems like Eastman students find that a bit of a hassle. Eastman is higher ranked but Miami jazz is very well respected.

Double degreeing at Eastman is a hassle. It can be done, but it is difficult. Most students who really want the double degree end up majoring in music theory or music history rather than performance.

Miami has a very fine jazz program with exceptionally talented students. It is a beautiful campus and the music buildings are in the heart of the campus. Eastman is exceptionally strong in jazz, but you won't get a college campus feel. You should go where you will be happiest. Go where you can see yourself being for 4 years (which means visitng both schools). Bottom line: it's much more important what you do at a school than where you go. If you are a talented jazz musician and someone is interested in hiring you, that person won't care one iota where you went to school (unless you're talking about the academic world). In fact, this applies to all musicians, not just jazz. No one will ever care what school you went to or who you studied with. Your success will be based on talent and hard work.

The kids in the jazz program at Eastman love it. They live, eat and sleep jazz. I don't think too many double major, the music schedule is just too busy. Surprisingly, Rochester has a very vibrant jazz scene and a GREAT international jazz festival. This year there will be over 600 performers!

Weenie's description of the Eastman jazz program is exactly why it is DS's first choice. He would like nothing better than to live, eat and sleep jazz. Unfortunately, at the moment, he also has to write English papers, take AP tests, etc!!

Nice jazz radio station in ROC

So where did you decide to go? We were looking at both but my son decided he liked Miami better after having spent two weeks in Roc decided he could not do it for 4 year. He would like nothing more than to sleep, eat and breathe jazz but decided he would rather do it in miami or NY where the real jazz scene is. Who knows?

Anyone know about Miami Frost school gpa and sat expectations? i know the overall school has high ones but how high is expected from jazz musicians?
