Miami (to airport, walmart, other places, etc...)

How far is U-Miami from miami international airport?

Where is the nearest Walmart (or similiar store) for incoming freshmen? Half of us probably cannot ship a fridge 5 states away so we'll be buying stuff once we get there.

How far will I have to go once I land at Miami Airport? Where do I tell the taxi driver to go (i mean the exact address)? Do I tell him to drive me to my dorm, student services office, etc? Is there a place on a website that details this?

Thanks a lot!

There is a Target releltively close to campus, but the nearest Walmart is like 8 miles away. The campus is only like 8 miles from the Miami airport, just tell any taxi driver you want to go to the University of Miami, they will know how to get there. We are waiting on the fridge also till we get there, don't feel like lugging it on an airplane from Colorado LOL, and it doesn't make sense to ship if you can buy one there. For the exact address, look on the website but I don't think you need it.

I hear that the Target gets really picked over fast on move in weekend, so you might miss out until a week or two into the semester for the fridge. Or you can try to get to a store further out, although without a car that may be difficult. Luckily, we will ahve a car and plan on picking one of the outlying Targets or whatever to shop at.

Here is the move-in website info <a href="http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,42701-1;42718-3;43894-3;42871-3,00.html#move-in%5B/url%5D">http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,42701-1;42718-3;43894-3;42871-3,00.html#move-in</a>

You head right to your dorm building to check-in. MIA is about 5 miles from the school and will take about 20 mins. Hecht's address is 1231 Dickinson Drive and once you get close, there will be lots of signs and attendents directing traffic. You can take a cab($25) or the SuperShuttle($15), but with alot of stuff, a cab is probably easier. Dadeland Station mall, which has a Target, BB&B, Best Buy and a few others, is about 2-3 miles past the school on Route 1.

jdm-Our strategy was also to go to the outlying stores, but we actually found that the stores closest to the school had the most inventory and kept restocking. Best Buy had tons of fridges and micros.

oh nice...
thanks a lot for your replies! that gave me some relief over my anxiety

There's a shopping center very close by with Target, Best Buy and Bed Bath and Beyond. There is also a Home Depot a little further down the street for room carpets, etc.
Try to shop early - also consider doing the "pack and hold" at BBB.
