Rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, but why such a discrepancy from year to year.
Just an opinion but I think there are a lot of California schools that are getting far more applicants than they used to and are moving up in the rankings. Miami is the same school it has always been. It’s US News that changes.
Right, it’s not that Miami has gotten worse, it’s that other schools have gotten better, and displaced it is all.
@JenJenJenJen Then why isn’t Miami getting better and aiming for the fences? Actually all of this is probably harsh and irrelevant. Miami is a wonderful school especially the FARMER school of Business, which is not even ranked by them The have no control how these publications go about doing what they do in order to self promote themselves Unfortunately, lots of kids and parents alike do pay attention to these rankings Ultimately, it should come down to fit and affordability
Miami has marketed itself to upper middle class kids. It has less social diversity than other Ohio public’s and loses points on the social mobility criterion. Academically it’s not changed but it needs to do better to fulfill its mission as a common good to the people of Ohio.
(Many universities are in the same boat - look at Pitt’s and Penn state’s slide.)
The USNews made significant changes to its ranking methodology this year and that led to changes in rankings.
It moved up in the undergraduate teaching rank.

All large Ohio cities have a decent public university. The reality is most students on tight budgets need to commute from home. Oxford, OH residents can do that, too. It’s just such a small population to serve. Miami University has carved a niche to bring oos and international students into Ohio and in state students get experiences usually found in private education but at a public school price - Kudos.
