Miami University in Ohio

My dream college is MU Ohio. I go to a very competitive public high school near the Chicago area. My gpa is in the bottom 50% of my class. Also my gpa so far is around 3.6/5 which is around a 2.8/4. Im planning on getting a 25-26 on my ACT. Many kids in my school apply there as a safety. However, I know someone whos donated $3 million to the school and I believe is on the board of the business school in which I want to attend. He will right me a letter of rec, but Im worried it might not help me. I will play soccer my senior year, so thats 4 years of soccer, im wrestling and also doing track this year. nevertheless ive played guitar since freshman year, do volunteer work and attended my first club this year that does work and you get hours. What are my chances?

I think your only hope may be the person who writes a letter for you. Our competitive school has only had one acceptance below a 3.0 and that was an ED acceptance so be sure and apply ED. That person also had a 23 on the ACT, which was also the lowest score ever accepted.

Your grades and scores both are extrememly low for Miami. Miami has a huge ocntingent of students from the Chicago area so unfortunately your application does not stand out from the perspective either. Miami U does not have a men’s soccer team, so even if you were a Div 1 caliber player, that would not matter to their admissions staff.

The letter of recommendation might or might not help… would it be only about what a nice person you are and how he knows your family, or would the letter be about what you would bring to the campus.

Finally, think about whether you would be competitive academically once you arrive on campus. Would you be able to handle the level of work required when you come in at the very bottom of the pool? Would your recommender be proud of your contribution to the campus or would he be embarrassed for having promoted you to their admissions people?

toledo? ED? I want to get in the business school. Also He will probably write family/ what id bring to campus considering im greek orthodox and my personal perspective on things are different, even though im wealthy like most of the students there. Yet, I looked on the sites and it states MU has 5% of kids with a gpa of mine who are incoming freshmen. Nevertheless my ACT will be average, 2 or 3 points higher than the lowest accepted. Id believe its mostly about Democracy and connections. However, im very well organized and I complete all my homework, Im just a bad test taker which brings down my grades. Id believe he can pull strings, but coming from students or more experienced kids know better. Nevertheless, he did say hed get me in but I dont want his word and not worry about it, I want to work hard my Junior year and get my gpa to a 3 or higher. What do you guys think now, still any chances or probably not? Im just worried cause I love my town and its just like MU Ohio and Im doing anything it takes now to get in.

Just remember that it’s not just about getting in, but being able to keep up and keep competitive in your academics while you are there.

It sounds like you may have the motivation to do so, but noting your bad test taking skills, tests in college often require more effort and much more material with less guidance than you might receive in high school.

Hopefully you have a few other schools on your radar too.

So you’re only a junior? I’m just trying to give you advice on getting into Miami. I think you’ll have to prove yourself there before they let you into the business school. Get your GPA up to a 3.0, as that seems to be the primary factor in determining admission. ED is early decision. Read up on it, as it gives students a slight edge.

Bring the GPA up as much as you can and try to score as high as possible on the ACT. The current GPA and projected ACT score probably aren’t high enough for admission, based on what the students from our local high school have seen.

oar, I don’t want to discourage you…if you work hard this year and raise your grades and scores, you certainly will improve your chances. But please realize that the 5% of students accepted with your gpa are most likely special cases…perhaps from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or sports recruits with a coach’s tip. While your influential friend may or may not be able to help you (check in to what is happening at the University of Illinois with people of influence promoting certain applicants to the admissions office), wouldn’t it be much better for you to be accepted on your own merits?

your all right. im planning on getting A’s and B’s this year and Im focusing more on my test taking abilities. Boysx, I told the man who is very connected with the school that I want to work very hard and see how I do and if anything have him help me, but so far its self motivation. I was talking to my ACT tutor today about MU and she said maybe I could be accepted into the school majoring Advertisement or Education(schools like men who want to major in Edu), and then switch into Business 2nd semester if my gpa is solid there.

I think BGSU is one of the most underrated schools in the state. Nobody really talks about them. im transferring to BG next year. i chose BG over OSU, OU, and Miami. But for my program, bg is one of the best. Im in sports management and bg and ou are two of the best sm programs in the country. But overall i think BGSU is a very underrated school.
