Miami University or Purdue University??

Hi everyone!
My son is a transfer student transferring to a different school in spring 2011. He got into Miami University Farmer School of Business and Purdue University Krannert School of Management (as a finance major) Can you please tell me/give me advice on which school is best for business? Also please let me know any information you have about the business programs at those schools, and the university and the location (how are the people, weather, etc).

He doesn't care much about the location and is more interested in going to a good school but he really cant decide between the two.
Thanks for the help!

Nod to Purdue.

Where is he now? Agree- nod to Purdue.

If your son can get into Miami’s honor that would definitely tip the scale in its favor.

I believe PU has much better placement.

StitchinTime has good info there. Have siblings who each graduated from Krannert and Farmer for undergrad. Both loved their school, the atmosphere, and got good jobs through on campus interviews. Purdue has big time Big ten sports and a very friendly vibe…strong engineering presence on campus. Lots of alums around the ctry and good rep. Miami has a little more preppy vibe, broomball, devoted alums, but maybe not as well known outside of the midwest. Heard the new Farmer bldg is georgeous though and their new ranking is impressive. Try to visit both schools if possible as you surely want to be happy with your choice and don’t want to transfer again. They are three hours apart and Indianappolis Airport is in the middle!

he is at san jose state university in california right now

thank you and thank you everyone for the help

These are both very different schools and which school you choose should consider those differences. As an HR person in Indiana, I will tell you that if you go to Purdue to study Business, you will have two reactions from hoosiers. 1.) What, you weren’t smart enough to study engineering? or 2.) What, you couldn’t get into Kelley? That being said, Purdue’s Business school is very strong in Quantitative Analysis. It is the one department in the Business School that has a VERY strong reputation…largely because of their tradition in engineering. They are very strong in Math and Statistics. Since my son is considering becoming an actuary after completing a degree in Business, He did think about Purdue. If you want to work on a national level, Purdue as a school is very well thought of. But what Purdue is known for is not their school of Business first and foremost. No matter what anyone tells you. If you are wanting to do the big school B-School in Indiana, why is IU not on the list?
Miami is also a great Business School. Ultimately, it is my son’s first choice. The Honors Program at Miami is terrific. My son wants to do their Chinese business option. He’ll take a couple of years of Chinese and then spend 6 months in China. The Honors program has a lot of flexibility. In 5 yrs. he can do the Chinese program, double major in Accounting and Finance, earn his MBA, and be eligible to sit for his CPA. That’s a lot of bang for the buck. And it is accomplished by the flexibility the Honors program allows.
You can do well at any of these schools, no doubt. But in terms of most rankings, they rank 1. IU, 2. Miami, 3. Purdue for Business. Finally, both IU and Purdue have large numbers of grad students. Miami does not. In terms of research opportunities, then, if you WANT to do ressearch, you can do that at Miami. They are known for it. It is one of the reasons why they have such a strong reputation for undergraduate education. These schools are all different. Your choice should be based on how each school would meet YOUR needs. We went through this process and ranked them 1. Miami Honors 2. Kelley 3. Purdue. Your comparison might produce a different result.

I have also heard that a VERY high percentage of Miami grads stay in the Cincy area, and that the school is a big feeder school to P&G. All of these schools have very strong Alumni Associations and none of them will give you trouble when you look for a job.
