MiamiOH business school reputation

Hey everyone, quick question. I am currently choosing between a few schools (university of San Diego, University of Denver, and Miami University) and I am curious about the business school’s reputation, particularly outside the Midwest (the south, Pacific Northwest, etc.) does it have a reputation for being a really good school? Are any of the other 2 that I mentioned more reputable? I really am stuck between the 3 and I want to know more about Miami’s FSB reputation. Thanks!

@Frodjekhalverson All three of those are good schools, and Miami U has an awesome reputation for their business school. I don’t think there is a “prestige” difference between those three, if there is then it would be limited to the local to the area where the school is located. But isn’t there one heck of a price difference between those schools?

This is a decision that will affect you the rest of your life. I would strongly recommend you attend a Make it Miami event soon, so you can experience Miami first hand. Farmers School of Business has a phenomenal reputation. There are statistics showing how Miami produces more CEOs, and Fortune 500 executives than any other public school (check the website for more accurate info, as I am just going off memory).

You really should visit all three schools. You will know what feels right.

@Frodjekhalverson I am from the northeast and familiar with many business schools. In the northeast I don’t think many have heard about the business schools of U Denver Daniels or U of San Diego. Those are more regional schools whose reputation is local to those areas. Miami Farmer is more known in the northeast and nationally. To give you some sense of perception, Miami Farmer is ranked #45 in US World&NewsReport versus UDenver Daniels is #91 and U San Diego is #109.

@trackmbe3 @Materof2 @EDHDAD Thank you guys for the helpful responses. EDHDAD - you are very correct about the price difference. I got just under full tuition at Miami and only $25k at USD (which is their largest scholarship so there is no room for more negotiation). This makes Miami about $20k per year vs. USD’s $40k per year. Denver, after further consideration, is out of the running. I did not like it there when I visited. I am leaning towards Miami but I live in Seattle so I cannot attend a make it miami event. I toured both and really liked them.

@Frodjekhalverson It sounds like my son got exactly the same scholarships as you at both Miami and USD so yes about $20k difference. We went to the Make it Miami event last week and submitted our deposit for Miami tonight. It’s just really too great of a deal to pass up. The other schools we were considering did not seem to bring anything substantially different to the table(other than maybe weather) but had substantially higher price tags so it made Miami an easy choice. The school is beautiful and the students all seemed happy It’s too bad you can’t make it there for a Make it Miami event. I am assuming with your scholarship level you would be invited to a presidential open house as an academic scholar. Meeting all the faculty and advisors at that event is what really sealed it for us.

@EDHDAD Congratulations on getting the decision made! I know our kids had several of the same options. I think Miami does a really good job of providing large school resources with a small school classroom and faculty interaction experience. We too were very impressed by the Make it Miami event. It surprised my D as she went into it without much excitement but left realizing that Miami checked a lot of the boxes on her list. Ultimately, the fact that so many kids from her HS attend (she wants to go somewhere different than where she grew up) and that she was looking for more of a city environment than Oxford kind of nudged her elsewhere. I was kind of rooting for it because of the distance and cost (it was our least expensive option too) but ultimately it wasn’t the best overall fit. C’est la vie. Good luck to your son!

@pishicaca Thanks! In our case everything we looked at was far from home because we want our kids to get out and experience life outside of CA for a while. The schools in the bigger cities that we looked at certainly had some perks, but ultimately with Miami we are able to have him attend college and not have to worry about working a job, or borrowing any money. He can focus on doing schoolwork, research, etc. without any financial worries. If he wants to study abroad, then we can afford it. If he wants to go on spring break or somewhere for the summer then we can afford it. His other choices stretched the budget so thin with just the cost of tuition and board that we were worried he would not be able to get the full experience. Plus with the premedical scholars program Miami just seemed to offer the best program for what we is interested in accomplishing.

We are from CA and missed the Make it Miami event but went on a campus tour and tour for Farmer’ School of Business. We were able to get individual attention during our Farmer tour and we were extremely impressed. From our recent decision tours, Miami stood out and was an obvious choice for my son. It is one of our most expensive options, but we are going to do it. We got some merit, but OOS tuition still makes it our most expensive option. I agree with @EDHDAD, living in CA will be a good experience for my son. We were in Miami just this week and it was snowing (in April?) but it did not bother us. The FSB stands out as a high quality school and we are excited to be a part of it.

@EncinitasJAK The personal attention is what did it for us too. We were there for two days and got to spend a ton of time with department heads, advisors, teachers, and current students. It snowed a little while we were there last week too. I figure my son can get used to it, especially given the right clothes.

We just visited Miami this week and can confidently say both the university and the Farmers School are impressive - as well as the students. Nationally ranked university and programs - no weak spots - beautiful campus - almost like a resort. We live in San Diego and I am in business and can say that USD is respected, but not a leader - it’s overshadowed by UCSD and SDSU - probably not known outside of San Diego. I can’t comment on University of Denver other than I haven’t seen it appear on any business ranking lists, unlike Miami. Good luck!

My Miami son is from Arizona and is finishing up his junior year in biomedical engineering. His roommate is from Northern Virginia and is a Farmer junior. Both he and my son were scholarship students in the freshman honors dorm. My son’s friend is a very good student and has had internships since his sophomore year. He has received multiple offers this year and is headed to Morgan Stanley’s Chicago office this summer. He actually taught a one-week modeling class at Princeton last winter. Farmer’s facilities are outstanding; as nice as at Michigan where I got my MBA.
