MICA Open house

Is anybody going to the open house at MICA this sunday for "scholarship finalists" which just probably means you've been accepted and are eligible for a scholarship, not a 'finalist' per say? I've already been for a tour but I'll be there for this 'special' open houe.

i think you're dead on with the somewhat fake "finalist" labeling.. but yes, i'll be there as well.. yay for waking up early on a weekend!!

I'll be going . . . I got the "scholarship finalist" invitation, but it only arrived in the mail the day after I had sent my scholarship forms in, so they couldn't have even received my forms when they sent it to me. It seems like they're just tagging on the scholarship finalist bit to make folks more jazzed about visiting. I was going to visit anyways, because it coincides with my spring break, so the special invitation didn't make much of a difference to me.

My understanding is that "scholarship finalist" designation is based on MICA ratings during portfolio reviews and interviews.

Not everyone is a "scholarship finalist".

i'm pretty sure it also has to do with whether or not you sent in the initial scholarship application - the one you chose to either submit with your original application for admission.

yeah the term "scholarship finalist" is used for the people that sent their applications in by a certain time...i think it was feb. 15th? i dont know. Since they have a rolling deadline only people that applied before feb. 15th are considered.

I got one too and i didn't even apply for scholarships...i know i'm not going.

Whether it's "fake finalist" labeling or not, the Open House last year was great and was the deciding factor in my son's decision to go to MICA (and yes, he got a big scholarship). I suspected at the time, maybe they were trying to weed out indifferent finalists from the list, by seeing who showed up at the event.

FWIW, there were two tour groups that day, one of which was specifically for "Scholarship Finalists" (with a rah-rah speech by school Pres. Fred Lazarus at Falvey Hall), so I assumed the other group (quite a bit larger) would not be offered a merit scholarship, but I didn't ask.

If you're thinking about going to MICA, and you are a scholarship finalist, this is definitely a worthwhile event.

I went this morning and it was pretty cool. I think it's a really nice school. Alot of the people at the open house looked kinda ***ed though. *shrugs Shoulders There was a large number of people there to be ''finalists''. Either way I'll still most likely go there. :)

It made it look like I used a curse word, when I didn't. I guess I should have used the word unhappy instead of p-ed off. ha.

guys can you share some feedback on the quality of student work on display at MICA? I am mostly interested in interactive/graphic design at the graduate level. What they show on the web-site isn't convincing at all to me :(

we (husband, daughter and me - art teacher, painter mom) visited mica looking for d's applying there in 2008. we spent a lot of time going thru the drawing studios and were very very impressed. students working on large scale figure studies, interesting and unusual perspectives, exciting command of tonal value. based on that visit d has moveed mica from the # 3 or 4 spot to 1 or 2 on her ever chging list of dream art schools.
