I would like to know more information about this 2 schools in the areas of Painting. My sister ist been accepted on both, and both gave her scholarship. RISD gave her a full scholarship and MICA only half. We dont know what to do, as she love the technical part af painting but also would like to explore some Film. Does anybody know something about these 2 schools.

Surely by now she's already made her choice, right? Wasn't May 1 the reply date?

Here's a previous thread on this subject. There are more if you search with RISD and MICA as keywords.

Actually the reply date is May 20. I know there are other threads like this one but I can't still decide. It would be nice to share more opinions.

I assume, then, that you've visited both schools, talked to students and professors, looked at the programs and the art? Perhaps if you have specific questions about each school, then those of us who have some experience with the schools can comment. But the thrust of my last comment on that thread that I linked is that this is going to be very much a matter of personal judgment, since both schools are very strong in painting. (My daughter graduated from RISD in industrial design.)

Is there a specific question? Because if she likes RISD and is getting a full scholarship ...... that soulds pretty good, unless, of course, there is something about MICA that she prefers, like the interdisciplinary options.

Go with RISD since they're offering more money. David Byrne went to both, so it's a toss up.

RISD gave a full scholarship? That is very rare from what I know of people who have either gone there or have been accepted.

If she said she got a full scholarship, then I guess she got a full scholarship. Good for her. Relevance of your statement?

Thank you for your recomendations..... I was a bit concern about the fact that RISD doesnt aloud you to do a minor in other concentrations, like Film. And also their website doesnt show to much work from their painting students. I dont know....

Mom of alex notes,"If she said she got a full scholarship, then I guess she got a full scholarship. Good for her. Relevance of your statement"

Response: Are you having a bad hair day? I wasn't disbelieving her post. I was a bit... shocked. I didn't think that they gave any full scholarships at all. Certainly Congrats to her.

No. Congrats to her would be, "That's great. It is really difficult to get a scholarship from RISD". Can you see the difference?

For both Modiam and Mom of Alex, sorry that I didn't say congrats in my post, which would have been the better thing to do. However, I know at least a dozen folks who either attended RISD or were accepted to RISD, and NONE got a full scholarship. IN fact, I don't think that any of them got even as much as 50% scholarship. In fact, RISD made it quite clear that they rarely, if ever, give out merit scholarship money and even need based aid isn't that easy to come by.Thus, I was responding out of complete surprise. Please fogive my lack of tact.

I'm not knocking anyone here, but a full scholarship at RISD does some an incredible occurrence--though not impossible.

I say this having received $16000 merit at SAIC and when making the offer, the director made it clear that they don't like to give much more to any one student. I did not qualify for financial aid.

Congrats to the OP and family.

Deadline to accept to both schools is May 1 for undergraduate freshman. It's unlikely that they received a full 'merit' scholarship from either RISD or MICA. And if they did, it's even more unlikely that anyone who was that good, and they would have to be to receive full merit scholarships from 2 of the top art schoolsl in the country, would need help from this forum deciding.

For those of you new to the Internet and forums - some of the information posted in what amounts to, an anonymous fashion, is not true. And is almost always extremely biased.

Of course, I am not saying the previous poster is lying.

My sister is going to be a sophomore, because she is transfering from a school Im not going to mention but its not good at all in Painting. For trasfer people the last day to decide its May 20. And yes, its still a difficult desition. Thanks for anyone that has any suggestion..... We were very sorprised also because she got so much money, but she has an amazing porfolio and I guess she deserve it.

Wow, that surprised me. I misread your first post, so I apologize.

I see that MICA only gave her half and RISD gave her a full scholarship. I would first like congratulate her. I know students who received national notable achievement awards from Scholastics (1 out of 20 students in entire country receive these honors) and didn't get a penny of merit aid from RISD.

Is your sister's portfolio online, perhaps, at any of the art site forums like DeviantArt? I would really love to see it.

Why won't you say the name of the school your sister is transferring from that's not up to par in painting? That would information that a lot of folks on this forum would love to know.

Artheartus, yea for your sister!!
I'd heard of RISD transfer students receiving great scholarships; it's nice to know it really happens.

I know that very few people double-major at RISD, but there are people, it seems, who are able to customize their major in a way, taking classes/studios in other depts. Likely, no one will lay out a plan, but your sister could probably find everything she needs/wants at RISD. She might want to talk with RISD more about her hopes & concerns. No reason to try and muddle out the reality alone. See if RISD will put her in touch with a student or two who is working in both painting & FAV.

Yes, transfer deadline to respond is may 20, and they extended the deadline for applications twice. So, not surprising that they are offering more scholarship $.

I think she is going to MICA..... It seems technicaly better in Fine Arts, plus the intelectual part its very much stimulated. Also she can do a Major in Painting with a concentration in Film. The painting class electives are amazing and maybe she can build her own bachelors degree. Thanks to everyone!

By the way, she is transfering from Parsons....
