MICA vs SCAD for Illustration

My son is considering these schools for Illustration. Does anyone have experience with either school in illustration? Which school is considered stronger in illustration?

I would not say Illustration is one of SCAD’s stronger majors. I cannot speak for MICA.

Illustration has recently become MICA’s largest major. A lot of the student work in that department is amazing as well.

My D plans to major in illustration as well. If you look at the winners of the Society of Illustrators for the past few years, you’ll see the students from schools that repeatedly win: MICA, SVA, Ringling, RISD, Art Center. SCAD, VCU, Pratt and Academy of Art also do well.

Yes, there are schools that consistently show a larger number of proizes awarded - but is it because there are more students, more works submitted by professors? After all, it’s a way for professors to be recognized as well. Note that one of the top prizes was awarded to a MCAD student and one to a Kendall College student, a school almost unheard of on this forum.

Agree, redbug, that there are excellent programs which may not make regular forum news. My guess is that the program size and administration interest has something to do with the number of submissions.

In any case, awards are just one of many factors to consider when selecting a school. For example, we are not going to consider RISD for undergrad because it is just too far away nor SVA because there is no campus. For our family, those are important factors that trump reputation.

Mom - D wanted to visit SVA but I explained how it would be walking down the street carrying all your stuff, because there was no campus. That changed her mind! We didn’t even consider awards in the process.
