Mich. or Berkeley for eng.

What would you recommend for an out of state student?

michigan. that is my slightly biased point of view.

Both are outstanding.

Overall, Michigan for undergrad, Berkeley for grad.

I would actually say Berkeley, although they're both excellent programs.

It depends on the specialization and your professional interests. If you wish to major in Biomedical or Aerospace Engineering, I would definitely say Michigan. If you want to major in Mechnaical Engineering with the intent to work for one of the Big 3, again, I'd say Michigan. On the other hand, if you want to work in the West Coast when you graduate, I would say Cal is a better alternative. In terms of overall Engineering, both are excellent with the slight edge going to Cal. However, when you factor in overall undergraduat education, I'd say it really depends on personal preference.

The one that is easier on your wallet.

Overall I would say Berkeley has better engineering. But the University of Michigan also has a good engineering department. If you are from out of state it would be easier to gain admissions to the University of Michigan. Also, perhaps it would be a good idea to visit the two schools and see which environment you like better. You will be spending the next four years there, after all.
