Michigan and hs gpa

does Michigan recalculate your hs gpa so you are on an even playing field or do they just take the one the school uses?

They used to recalculate it but in October of 2009, that policy changed and now they just use the one that is on the transcript.

I believe they are mainly concerned with un-weighted GPA but will definitely take into consideration your course rigor.

Im pretty sure my hs only sends the weighted gpa will umich unweight it and if they do how will they do it?

I had a umich presentation at my school today. Apparently, they still re-calculate GPA. Idk if that’s true or not though.

I suspect that they have to recalculate GPA, otherwise how could you tell the difference between a GPAs that use a 4, 5 or even 10 scale? I just think they got rid of the old system of A-, A or A+ being a 4 and all Bs being a 3 etc and are now using the regular college scale to calculate GPAs. I don’t know if its true, I’m just speculating.

That makes sense but ajhhs did they go into detail about it or they just said they recalculate it?

Like anthonyxy21 said. They drop +s and -s and recalculate an unweighted GPA. APs/ACs/Honors are worth as much as regular classes. However, they take course rigor into account.

It was an hour long presentation from the Midwest admissions rep, so let me know if you guys have more questions. I’ll try my best to answer them.

Do they look at freshman year?

['U' to no longer recalculate GPA in admissions process - The Michigan Daily]('U' to no longer recalculate GPA in admissions process)

I couldn’t actually find the original statement made on the admissions website after they changed it but this should be useful.

Anthony is it possible they used that system for 2 years and went back to the old one unless they lied at ajhs presentation?

I was told they didn’t recalculate by teachers and friends, yet the admissions officer said they would drop minuses and pluses. I don’t know which is right, but I’d think the admissions officer is right.

yea I don’t think the admissions people would lie and did they say anything about 1st quarter senior year grades?

It’s really easy to look at a transcript and eyeball a GPA if the transcript is expressed with letter grades without even looking at whatever GPA the particular school listed on the transcript. Think about it for a second…all As 4.0, all Bs 3.0 half As and half Bs 3.5 tilt it one way or the other if there are alot of pluses or alot of minuses and you don’t even have to use a calculator. Weight whatever that eyeball value is mentally by the number of classes the student took that were labeled rigorous by their HS. Conversely, the admissions person could look at the GPA then look at the transcript and probably see if the stated GPA makes sense or if it’s got some heavy weighting. Whether or not admissions has someone recalculating GPAs or not is really a moot, admissions people look at transcripts every day. The only transcripts that would require alittle brain power are transcripts that didn’t have letter grades and weren’t on a 0-100 scale. Just my opinion.

Don’t worry too much about how Michigan calculates GPA anyways because the admissions officers look at each individual grade and get a feel that way. They don’t simply just look at a number, they go much deeper than that.

They said they’d look at first semester grades only if they really can’t make a decision with the information provided. For example, if there are extenuating circumstances that have been mentioned in an essay.

so basically they will only look at 1st quarter grades if it benefits you they will not make you send them?
