Hey, I have a question about the campus at Michigan. I like the fact that Michigan has a large student population, but was wondering just how big the campus feels. For instance, I did not like Penn state when I visited it becasue the campus was literally a city. Any insight you can provide would be appreciated. thanks.

I've never been to Penn State but it sounds similar to Michigan.

UM is split into two separate sections about a mile or two apart. Engineering and the arts are on one with everything else on the older main campus. Not the best solution.

PSU has a 6,000 acre campus, Michigan has a 3,000 acre campus. Both have 1,000 acres of athletic space and Michigan has a 1,000 acre medical and health sciences space. So as far as undergrads are concerned, Michigan is a 1,000 acre campus and PSU is a 4,000 acre campus. In other words, both are large, but PSU is significantly larger. I am not very familiar with PSU's campus, but Michigan is often noted for looking smaller than it is because the campus is very efficiently compartmentalized.

What school did you apply to? I was in LS&A and spent all four years on central campus--never set foot on north campus. It was a manageable size, very walkable...felt almost condensed for a university of 40,000. Ann Arbor and the university are intermingled so lots of city amenities/conveniences to/from class. A very different layout than some of the other big, spread out U's like Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue. Haven't seen Penn State so can't compare it.

Yeah...a lot of times I wonder where they put all the people on campus. It doesn't feel big AT ALL. They did a good job of keeping the distances b/t academic buildings and residence halls managable. I think the only really badly locating res hall is Markley.

I was just about to say exactly what kb said. My world exists in the quarter mile between south quad and Diag/East Hall, and I often wonder where they fit all the people. The school feels around 5,000 people or so until I go to football games.
